Hi

I have been having a lot of problems with a new build, an ASUS B85M-G motherboard and an i5 4570 (1150) processor. I have had one BSOD, several brief blackouts, a few crashes, and some noise from the hard drive, a WD Caviar Black 500GB. The hard drive makes some loud knocking sounds on every boot from cold, occasional loud revving noises, and a whining noise on every shutdown.

I have ran the SF Diagnostics tool and have been able to collate all information except MGADIAG and CPU-Z. The application crashed on MSINFO32. Please let me know if I have provided enough information for analysis. SF Diagnostics info attached.

Thanks.

If I may make a suggestion.
I would suggest backing up all your data you want to save to a external media.
From post # 1.

Your hard drive should not make all those noises. It's probably trying to go to it's happy hunting ground.

Back to watching for me.

DM log collector results

Hi Arc

Please accept my very sincere apologies for the delay in response as I have been quite unwell for some time (fractured hand). The DM log collector zipped file is attached. The system is slightly more stable now than it was but I'm still afraid that unless I find out what really happened another crash is inevitable sooner or later. The OS on the i5 build, W7x64, was transferred from my Pentium Dual Core, and activated successfully by phone; I typed in the numbers read out by the automated system and did not need to speak to the operator. Once the BSOD analysis is complete, gregrocker has advised that I do a re-install.

Hi Layback Bear

Your hard drive should not make all those noises. It's probably trying to go to it's happy hunting ground.

I reached the point where I was about to RMA the Western Digital drive, especially after seeing these -

http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/28024-wd-caviar-black-noisy.html

http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/174571en?language=en_US

http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/how-to-tech/how-to-recover-data-hard-drive6.htm

I proceeded to test the hard drive with Western Digital's own software, WinDlg_v1_25, HDD Scan, and SeaTools for Windows and it passed all the tests, both the quick and the extended tests. Since the WD drive was so poorly packaged i.e. just skin-tight cardboard and no bubble wrap, I expected it to at least fail the conveyance test but it didn't. When the revving noise started again I opened the case whilst it was happening and listened very, very carefully, and it wasn't the WD hard drive making the revving sound, it was the CPU cooler fan (an Arctic Freezer 11 Low Profile) vibrating out of control, so I've RMA'd it. Gregrocker had said that the revving noise was most likely fan related, but at that time the noise seemed to me to be coming from the front of the case, not the middle or the back, and since I always keep the optical drive empty of disks, the remaining culprit was the WD hard drive.

With regard to the other sounds – I just changed the CPU cooler on the Dual Core; the old one always made brief loud revving sounds 3 times on start-up, but only on start-up, in sharp contrast to the i5's occasional revving well past start-up as I earlier described. The new CPU cooler for the Dual Core is completely silent, and from this I have discovered that the loud clicking sounds on start-up that I had complained of from the Western Digital drive is similar to that of the 3 year old Seagate in the Dual Core. I would describe it as a cross between a judder and a very loud click twice, but both drives do it. Where the drives differ is on shutdown – the WD shuts down with a whine while the older Seagate shuts down with a loud click and then a whine.

Pending the results of the DM log collector analysis, at the moment I am unable to justify to Western Digital why the new hard drive should be replaced. However, I am willing to try out any further rigorous testing suggestions you may have for the WD hard drive. Precaution-wise, I only keep system files on my PC hard drives, everything else is stored on 7 external hard drives of varying sizes up to 1TB, all of them Seagate brand.

Test your HDD using Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows.

Post a screenshot of the disc using CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World

Get rid of intel rapid storage. First uninstall it from Control Panel > Programs and Features. Then Uninstall the driver from device manager.

 1. Right click on "my computer" icon and click "manage" on the context menu.
 2. It will open the "computer management" window.
 3. Select "Device Manager" in the left pane, It will list all the existing devices up.
 4. Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" by clicking on the triangle in front of it.
 5. Select one Intel device item under it, right click, uninstall.
 6. Continue the process for all Intel items under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
 7. Now restart the computer. At restart, windows will auto configure the appropriate native system driver.
Let us know the results.

Hard Drive diagnostics results

Hi Arc

Please find below the hard drive test results from both Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, and CrystalDiskInfo. As shown by the latter, Windows has now assigned a new AHCI driver after I uninstalled it and ATA Channel 0 and ATA Channel 5 as directed.

When the BSOD analysis is complete, I'll re-install Windows on this i5 build avoiding drivers from ASUS's support page, which is what led me to seek help in the first place – the audio driver had a virus, audiodg.exe, and the USB3 driver is slower at read/write speeds than USB2. On re-install I'll use the motherboard DVD drivers and wait for Windows to prompt me to update them. On uninstalling the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver, there is now an exclamation mark in System Devices -> AMDA00 Interface, and I just found this info, which shows that ASUS's drivers for this B85M-G motherboard are below acceptable for system stability-

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/4713bfbd-c6e0-4589-ac08-27eb0feb4372/amda00-interface?forum=w8itprohardware

I'll wait for your response and the go-ahead to re-install Windows.

EDIT on 21/07/14: I need to make a quick clarification on the AMDA00 Interface driver. When I saw the yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager for this driver, I was in Safe Mode, and I wrongly assumed that it was uninstalled by Intel Rapid Storage Technology's removal. It loads up in Normal Mode. I'm sorry for the incorrect observation.

Everything is looking fine. Plus it is good that the HDD passed the tests. So the issue was not with the physical HDD but with the driver.

If the exclamation mark does not cause any lack of functionality, you may overlook it.

But after reading what you stated about the virus, I would support your thinking of going for a clean reinstall.

Go through the guide: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html

If you do the clean install as guided there, your installation will be driver complete itself; and you will not need to think about the drivers anymore.

All the best.

BTW, in post #3, Layback Bear pointed to the sound generated by the HDD. Is it still there?

Good to go...

Hi Arc,

Many, many thanks for pinpointing my motherboard drivers as the cause of all my BSOD and system instability problems, and I can now proceed with re-installation with confidence following the recommended guide Clean Install - Factory OEM Windows 7. In fact, I just used that guide to remove the bloatware on my HP W7 Starter Netbook, and its now a lean, mean machine. The noise on this i5 build was not the HDD at all, it turned out to be my CPU cooler and I'm receiving a new one today by RMA.

Many thanks again.
