Solved New Build: Restarts instead of Shuts down

Hi folks,

Here's a topic I know has been created before, but that thread is old and the solution hasn't worked for me.

I finally built my first computer this weekend. It's going great, but I'm having problems turning it off (not just because I can't stop playing with it). When I hit shut down on the start menu it shuts down, only for it to restart a few seconds later. If I hold the power button when it starts restarting then it turns off. Not a huge problem but kind of niggling.

I wondered if anyone could help?

Here's my build:

Mobo: GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3
CPU: Intel i5 2500k
RAM: Kingston HyperX Blu 8gb
HDD: Samsung Spintpoint F3 1tb
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Here's what I've tried so far:
Updated the BIOS to f9
Updated all drivers
Reset CMOS (removed battery for an hour)
Checked power options
Disconnected network cable/usbs
Ran a Ubuntu live disk and shut down via that

Completely at a loss now, hoped you could help! Can't RMA most of the components, so if there's any fix to this annoying problem it'd be great.

my old Antec 900 case used to have a dodgy on off switch.

It would cause the computer to randomly restart after the computer had fully shut down.

To tell if this is the cause, unplug your on off switch from the motherboard, and then just use something metal to touch the 2 pins together. The computer will start, and then shut it down, if it then reboots its not a switch issue.

If you have an old case you could pull the power header off of, you could plug it in and just touch the wires together...

My plan is to first reinstall Windows, I think (but can't be sure) the endless updates started this behaviour maybe. Not sure how I'll avoid that if it's true.

If not, I'll try and borrow a PSU from somewhere and see if that's the problem.

The case is a Fractal Design Core 1000

Try this first. Right click on the start button and select properties, change the power button options to restart and click OK. From the arrow next to the start button select shut down and see if that works. If it does, try changing it back to see what happens. If that does not work, open an elevated command prompt (start, type cmd in search box, right click cmd and select run as administrator) type in the command window, sfc /scannow (notice the space between sfc and /). That will check the system files for errors. If neither of those things work, I would think it was a hardware problem, perhaps the front panel connections were connected wrong or a bad switch.

I know you've cleared CMOS, but try the reset to optimized deafults and then reset RAM settings etc.

I have a feeling this is MOBO related in some way. The new bios was supposed to resolve this. I remember reading about others having similar issues with certian hardware configurations.

I built a similar system this weekend. Have you checked to see that the power switch cable is connected correctly to the motherboard header?

Well, I just rebuilt the whole machine and the problem persists. If only it were easier to find which part's causing the problem - I don't want to buy a new case, psu AND motherboard...

The fans don't stop when it "shuts down", I don't know if that narrows it down. I'm kind of hoping the case is the problem, but coming from a laptop I don't really have anything to test that out with.

Not really convinced Windows is causing the problem... Hmmm...

I'm going to be bold and point the finger at your power supply. I don't think its letting go of the charge. That will also explain why the fans spin

Hold off on any purchases for a few hours lol, there's an artical in a magazine I have at home with what I think is the same issue!
If you can wait 4 hours ill get back to you on it. Also as your psu is new it will be covered under warrenteeeeee

The PSU is new, but was bought off ebay, so I'm not sure the warrantee will stand. That'll teach me!

Gonna just stick with this PSU and ask for an exciting new one for Christmas.

This sound like the case POWER switch is connected to the motherboard RESET connector. Use a magnifier to check for sure and for correct polarity.

surely if the power switch was attached to the reset pins it would do nothing when pressed?

both buttons are just monetary switches, and neither is different from the other. other than shape. im hammering my reset button on my rig now and it wont boot as obviously its not attached to the power pins.

The reset is a different function on the board, it momentarily cuts power and restarts immediately, at least mine does.

yeah but if the power switch was connected to the reset pins it would just turn into a reset button.

if you were to touch the 2 reset pins together when the computer is off it will do nothing. Like i said reset or power, both are just simple switches, the only difference is what we use them for.

And that wouldnt account for the fans still spinning.
