went to the link and it says mainstream support ended a year ago and it is now in extended support. But I have been manually downloading security and non-security updates on both my WIN7 machines all this year without problem until July 29th. Maybe I am being forced into checking the automatic update option.

I changed my dual boot W7/W10 computer to just W10.

Four computers are still W7.

The end of mainstream support I understand to mean that no further development of the os will take place (no new features or updating of existing features), and no support for new technologies will be added.

The extended support will continue to provide security related support and some corrections to previous issues, (updated drivers)

Microsoft keeps bragging about how many users have "upgraded" to Windows 10. BUT, I wonder how many of those have went back to Windows 7?? I went back to W7 after trying W10 on two computers. No thanks MS.

I had to migrate my work laptop to Win 10.

I did the usual UI re-configuration ... and the result is a color-altered Win 7.
Sure, there are various new task bar items, but I've disabled that crap.
And I disabled whatever phone-home items I could find.

So, aside from cosmetic frivolities, what changed? Not much.

I actually prefer.... wait for it.... Windows 8.1 over Windows 10. Yes, I know, shock horror!
There are some things that annoy me about 8.1 but once it's had some tweaks applied, and Classic Shell installed, it's really not a bad OS (although reducing the shadow copy functionality REALLY annoys me).
It's definitely not as bloated as 10 and not much point updating if you're going to disable all the features.

Always makes me laugh when people say "Oh, it's shaved 10 seconds off my boot time.... Wow, I can hardly contain my excitement on that one.

As for improved security, if a person uses good security tools and uses a fair amount of common sense, then there shouldn't be any issues staying safe and secure online with Windows 7.

Clean Install W7 Instead

Always makes me laugh when people say "Oh, it's shaved 10 seconds off my boot time.... Wow, I can hardly contain my excitement on that one.

For reference, I just finished a clean install of W7 on my main PC (about a week ago).

It shaved ~10 seconds off of my boot time (~23 seconds).

I find 10 so counter productive having to re-setup everything after these large updates
Plus if things stop working it's reset time yet again

I still to this day can not get word pinned to the silly start menu and show recent doc's on a list

My W10 Home install (or my SSD) succumbed to "Bit Rot" after ~20 boots ("inaccessible boot device" error).

The Recovery Environment still loaded and Linux Mint 18 (dual boot) was unaffected.

I couldn't fix the "inaccessible boot device" error, so I ended up using the "Reset" option.
At least the "Reset" option worked without any issues.

Can't say I've ever wanted to sit there and time how long it takes to boot up. As long as it doesn't take 5 minutes, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I don't really take any notice of benchmarks either. As long as my pc runs okay then I'm happy.

I'm not understanding why boot time a few seconds one way or the other would be a measuring method to determine what operating system one chooses. With the difference between Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 with a little effort one can find something else to judge what operating system one desires.

As fast as computers boot today I'm also not understand why their is a option to Sleep or Hibernate.

Yea everything has gone to power saving = battery measuring from mobile first world blah....
Otherwise I've pretty much gone quick or fast boot off just for good measure
It really makes no difference to me
I hit the power button and fix a cup of coffee and it's ready when I come back
If there is no bsod or no disk found message it might be a good day

I have activity on my computer 24/7, such as scans, TV recording, etc. so it has to stay on.

I also shut everything down when I have finished with the computer. Power interruptions here are a problem as well.
I have a UPS as well & a surge protector.
A boot up time of 20-30 seconds in my case is not a very long wait.

Won't have to listen to me moaning, I don't want 10. If I ever change my mind, I'll buy it and clean install it, if I don't buy Apple. Till then it's W7.

Same here. If Windows 10 ever evolves into an environment and shell that I like, I'll buy it. Right now, I really like Windows 8 (that's the original version using Server 2012 updates). My biggest beef is that if I were to go buy a new notebook PC right now, I'd have to accept Windows 10. Hopefully there'd be a box that would accept a downgrade to Windows 8.

But why exactly is that? I have my system running flawlessly just like Byrds7t7 does with Classic Shell, and all of the Metro crap removed. It runs JUST AS GOOD as Windows 8.1. Pretty much none of the 8.1 fixes applies to the regular Explorer-style desktop. And I have NO telemetry or GWX updates. So why does it bring on the hatred still?
