Hi all,
I have just bought a new motherboard and processor, and the OS doesn't seem to be booting.
I first bought the Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3, I put this in along with my new processor the Bulldozer FX8120, after placing them in my computer correctly, and as Windows 7 Ultimate started up it stopped at the loading screen, I then referred back to the Gigabyte website and noticed that my processor was not supported (i know; silly mistake). I then went on to buy the MSI 970A-G46; as all my past motherboards have been MSI (i did check to see if my processor was supported first). Upon placing it in my computer it did exactly the same thing, and stopped on the loading screen it the rebooted and suggested that I run System repair, this did nothing. Also I was hoping to install the drivers after I had the computer up and running (as i cannot connect my very old DVD drive) off the internet; but i will hopefully have a new DVD drive by the end of today and shall see what happens.
can anyone please help me.

Hiyya MC and welcome Mate am not real sure of what you are asking here for instance the OS is this a new OEM, retail, or what for the MSI board?

If you installed an OS on the Giga mobo then it will be tied to that one, so that OS will not be accepted by Microsoft as a genuine copy on the MSI board. I know this doesn't answer your query per se' but it's a start.

Start fresh. Format the hard drive and go back through installing Windows. Make sure beforehand to change the SATA controller to AHCI in the BIOS if it is not already set that way. See how that works out.

I really don't want to format my HDD if it's possible, but at the moment I am running an MSI motherboard and duel core processor and that works fine its just when I change over to my new CPU and motherboard.

You still didn't say whether you used the OS from a retail or OEM disk on the Gigabyte board first and then tried installing it - the very same retail or OEM OS disk on the MSI board so which is it or have you now got two retail or OEM OS disks?

Am asking for the reasons I spoke of in post #2

If I understand what you post, you moved an HD with a Windows installation to a different motherboard.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

A clean install on the new system is recommended.

The middle ground is to put the drive back on the original motherboard, and run "sysprep" to generalize it:

What is Sysprep?

However you do it, you will probably have to activate Windows on the new system again. I hope that you have a license that will permit that (not OEM).

What he is saying is are you using a RETAIL computer that you have upgraded the mobo/cpu in? If you are using the same HDD from your RETAIL PC, but a different mobo/cpu and expect it to boot up, it ain't happenin. If you have any data on your HDD that you need, back it up somewhere, and then format it. Once it is completely clean, use a disk or flash drive to re-install Windows on it. After that is done, if you change mobo's again, guess what.........you'll have to do that process again.

Yes Bob which is what I was trying to find out as it seemed to me that the OS was installed on the Giga board and like you say being run on a MSI board from the installed HDD.

Now I think he might get lucky like I was - if he appeals to M$ to let him change it over. Only my problem was the original board died, and mine was an OEM.

In any case I reckon a wipe of the HDD and totally clean reinstall would be in order to make absolutely sure things wee tickety boo.

I am running an MSI motherboard and duel core processor and that works fine its just when I change over to my new CPU and motherboard.

Make sure you have the latest bios installed, which is 7693v10 according to here,

MSI Global ? Mainboard - 970A-G46

It could be that that board didn't support the FX CPU's in its initial release and support was added after, which means updating the bios before it will work (Asus did this with most of their 970 and 990 based boards). If you don't have the latest and yours is one of those, you will have to to the flash using the dual core you have in now. Then once done you can swap the FX in.

Yes Bob which is what I was trying to find out as it seemed to me that the OS was installed on the Giga board and like you say being run on a MSI board from the installed HDD.

Sounds to me more like what is on the HDD came from the computer/motherboard before the Gigabyte board.

Sorry to confuse everyone, but this is my custom computer I built years ago, the OS I installed is on one of my 3 HDDs and I use to have both XP and Windows 7 Ultimate, but then I removed the one with XP a few months ago. Also the OS was a on a disk that I installed about 6 months ago.

Now I think I must have it wrong as I was under the impression that this machine first had a Gigabyte board in it and the OS was installed on it?

But now am I right in saying that the Gigabyte board set up would install the OS but not load the system.

That the Giga board was then taken out and the MSI board and CPU were then installed and then the HDD with the OS installed originally put on it put in the machine and expected to run?

Because it seems to get very confusing indeed. Because if now the OP has installed the MSI board and hooked up the HDD that was originally hooked up to the Giga board when the OS was installed on it means that he is trying to get a board to work that the OS is not tied to.

Any way you skin it, changing motherboards means reloading the OS. And it seems like there is at least one MB swap in this story. We are still partially right, I think lol

I've done 10 motherboard and CPU swaps so far and windows 7 was able to boot up and run fine. The latest one was a few days ago, amd phenom x4 setup to an i5 ivy bridge.
We upgraded our fathers machine for his birthday.

Sounds like the op needs to go into the bios and switch the sata mode from ahci to IDE.
I experienced the same issue with 2 of the swaps.

Well MC looks like the mobo BIOS is cooked mate.

I would like just out of curiosity now to see in point form the chain of events as in

1. Built the machine with a Giga board the CPU HDD etc etc
2. Installed OS on this build.
3. Realised the CPU was wrong.
4. Changed the board and on it installed the original CPU RAM and that original HDD
5. Fired it up - it ran
6. Then tried to update the BIOS
7. Machine crashed.

Now at point 5. if the OP had asked Microsoft to re ID the mobo then things would be sweet? The problem comes at point 6 from trying to flash that BIOS?? In which case like someone else said unless you are particularly good at soldering the chances of recovering that board are slim.
I consider myself reasonably good at soldering having constructed many circuits over the years but this is one job I would not attempt for the price of another board and a cal to Microsoft it just isn't worth the grief!

MC if my point form is wrong can you post back just like that what you did as you did them please?

I am reading it like this,
1. Os was installed already on the old parts.
2. Bought gigabyte board and CPU and machine would get stuck at loading screen due to CPU & mobo incompatibility. (If the CPU wasn't supported it would error out during post)
3. Bought MSI board to work with new CPU
4. Windows gets stuck on the loading screen, same as with the gigabyte board.
5. Now the machine is not outputting video.

The initial problem from the get go was most likely just the IDE mode, he experienced the common issue when windows is installed on a sata drive in IDE mode and then trying to boot up with sata in ahci mode without enabling ahci mode in windows first.

Yeah Zephyr I can see what you mean re the IDE and set up but I would have liked the original post to say something like
I replaced the board (brand and model) in my machine with a Gigabyte board and transferred the other gear over now realised the CPU was not compatable
Then bought the MSI board and stuck all the gear on that and now it will still not boot......

Now this still leaves the OS install tied to the board that was in the machine from the very start that the OS was originally installed on and that was subsequently replaced? Or was this board put back in the machine after the Gigabyte episode??

Therefore I still have difficulty in understanding is - is the MSI board THE original board or a brand new one are there in fact TWO MSI boards involved?!

Yes, there is 2 MSI motherboard s involved.
The first which worked perfectly and im using now, and had all the OS and software put onto it.
The second is the one which has no video output or doesn't start up.

Got it Mac so the OS is then tied to that board you have in (the original one).

Well in that case maybe the second board is a no goer and perhaps a replacement job. Apart from say using the Giga with a processor it will accommodate that to me at least would be the only choice you have. In any event if the thing had just worked ok you would have eventually had to ask Microsoft for a change of boards.

I did this recently as I installed an OEM on a desktop refurbish and the board died so I reinstalled the OS onto a laptop - then contacted Microsoft explained the situation and they gave me instructions to follow and they let me activate the OS on the laptop which in essence is now the original board.

Now I suppose you have no test bench stuff you can set up to try out the second MSI board on? I mean as in hook it up to an old spare PSU the HDD (with the OS on it) that CPU and the rest of the gear - outside of the case if it still gets no video then looks like it is a rogue board mate.

I have to ask too why did you need to change the original board - for better specs?
