Hello John,

Just having a few thoughts about your fans

You have said that these are four large fans which I assume are being run from the on board connectors.

Every electrical item will have a rating which it requires to run, (expressed as either current or wattage, both different ways of expressing the same thing).

The board Connectors will most likely have a limit that they can supply, I would appear that the combined load of your fans exceeds the rating that the board can supply directly which is causing the issue you are having.

If this is the case then all is not lost, what you will need is some form of remote relay activation which will allow you to take the power directly from the PSU whilst taking just the control signal from the MB these fan controllers are available in the market

Actually there are 3 10" case fans and I was trying to power them on a SATA to Molex daisy chain from the PSU. This ran the fans but disabled my internet connection instantly (?)
Tonight I've looked at it again and see there are 4 tiny 2 pin connectors on the PSU. these are marked in the PSU manual as fan connectors so I'm trying them with a 2 pin to female molex each.
I'll report back on that when I've tried it out. This is a bugger with only one monitor as I have to try something and then swap it all back again.
I am intending to fit a further 3 Akasa Apaches inside the case. I imagine I'll be able to power them off headers on the mobo. If not I'll look at buting a splitter as theog suggests (thanks theog)

Hey Ho.

Well I got my fans working as above, tiny 2 pin connectors on the PSU.
That pleased me tremendously but then I found I couldn't connect to the web and I had no sound.
I went through the usual steps trying to connect and then searched the Gigabyte disk that came with the bundle.
On there I found some Realtek drivers but they don't work. I did however get an audio driver. Now my little speaker icon is on but I still get no sound.
So I went back into my Vista install. There the Realtek drivers worked and that's where I'm typing from.
I hunted around and found some drivers that supposedly worked with W7 but they won't install. In fact I've tried 4 different Realtek W7 driver and none of them will work!
Also the sound works fine in Vista.
This is all very weird. Seems like I have a W7 driver problem. I suppose I'd better start a new thread in the appropriate place.
Feel like I'm getting there but it's nowhere near as simple as I'd anticipated.

I've had no luck with the Windows Update Network drivers. The ones off the CD from Gigabyte worked for me, though. Maybe try downloading the latest from Gigabyte's website?

For the audio I downloaded the AC97 drivers from Gigabyte. Make sure you run the setup program that indicates the correct output ports on the back of the MB. (i.e., "Front Speakers" "Rear" "Subwoofer", etc, as applicable.) You may also need to go into Control Panel under "Sounds" and check the detailed settings. As I recall, some of my initial speaker problems amounted to nothing more than Windows having set the volume level to "0".

Hi all,

I just built my first pc (almost) from scratch and I can't get it to POST at all.

Here's the rig:

Overclocked Core i7 bundle from Overclockers.co.uk- Core i7 [email protected] Ghz, Gigabyte EX58-UD5 MB, 6GB Corsair XMS RAM, Noctua NHU-12P HSF.

I put this in a Cooler Master ATCS 840 case with a Be Quite 850W modular PSU

I then swapped out my Samsung F1 1TB drive into the new case. This contains my Vistax64/W7x64 RTM dual boot.
I also installed my XFX GTX 260 Black Edition GPU.

With the rig main components all in the case and the PSU and HDD connected to the mobo I decided to see if it would post so I connected to my Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP.

It won't. I tried with HDD connected and without and it won't, tried putting a USB mouse and keyboard in, still won't post.

Then I noticed my GTX 260 did not seem to have power, at least the fan wasn't running but this may be for other reasons (maybe it's clever enough to know it's got nothing to do).
I swapped this out for an 8800 GTS and this fan runs but still no POST.

There is power in the mobo, HSF works and I get lots of flashing LEDs indicating heavy load but zilch on screen.

So even with only power into the mobo, no HDD connected, just a GPU and a monitor it won't post.

I've tried everything I can think, reseated the RAM, tried both GPUs again, looked at the PSU etc and various combination of the above and I've run out of ideas.

Hopefully I'm missing something obvious. Any ideas would be welcome.

About the overclocked part at the top of your first statement.

Is this supposed to be some sort of pre-overclocked system because the I7 920 default clock is 2.67GHz but you are showing it at 3.8GHz?

It seems to me that something is inherently wrong with that.

I would start by clearing the cmos if that is the case.

Hi Chev65. I think I have done (cleared the cmos) as it's at stock now.

Profdlp- I got network drivers from Gigabyte's website and have got my internet connection sorted out.
I also downloaded realtek audio drivers (not the ac97 ones). They show as working and I've got a volume mixer and they show in the sound manager.
However I don't get any sound in W7 just in my dual boot with Vista 64.
I have my sound running through an old but high quality hifi system with two large stereo speakers. So I take the sound from the middle (green) socket at the rear of the case with a mini jack plug.
Obviously this is not working in W7 but is in Vista.
What about the ac97 drivers? I got the impression that they were for surround sound and I only have 2 speakers.
Do they require a different connection on the mobo?

I think I'm nearly there with this and I can't wait to tidy the cables and put the sides back on. I'll have to put this monolithic case (CM ATCS 840) up on my desk as I have an extremely hairy dog at my feet

Prof. I now have both the Azalia Drivers and the AC'97 and still no sound in W7.
All indications on the monitor are good- volume ok, media player shows working etc.
Odd that the sound is fine when I boot into Vista.
Off to work now, I'll think about it later. J

Hi there

some of these boards use AC97 if you connect the audio to the front and HD audio if you use the rear connectors (or the other way around - I can't remember exactly) and the option needs to be set either via jumpers on the mobo or in the BIOS. You can't use both sets unfortunately. RTFM for which configuration you want to use.

Some motherboards as well (great idea) actually have a little web application built into their bios (ASUS for example) which means you can connect to to net before even loading an OS so you might be able to retrieve drivers if you don't have another working machine available. Don't expect this to be a fully featured browser like firefox however but good in an emergency. You can also flash update your BIOS this way --take CARE if you do that - an error here will render the MOBO as only fit for a one way trip to the Tip.

The biggest cause of No sound output with Windows 7 & Vista, that I have found, is the simple error of setting the default output device incorrectly.

Most, if not all, modern motherboards, will have both analogue and Digital output capability. This will be picked up as present by the driver even if no actual connections have been made.

Windows also sometimes gets things wrong when selecting the default output to use

It may be worthwhile checking your defaults, John. Right Click on the speaker select Playback devices, and check which has the Green tick, It does sound obvious but I know it can be easy to miss I wasted over an hour on a Vista system not long ago

Well done Nigel and Jimbo. I thought I'd try the front headphone jack as you suggest Jimbo and got an enormously loud hum from my loudspeakers.
I quickly switched off the hi fi and then removed the jack and replaced it in the socket at the back,
This produced a popup box asking what audio device I had just plugged in and "line in" was ticked.
I changed this to headphones (no speaker tick box) and now I've got great sound!
This is amazing. With the help of you guys I've managed to built my first pc from (almost) scratch. Considering I'd never used or done anything with a pc until 2004, when I was given one for my photography, I feel dead pleased with myself and the friends I've got on this forum
