New SSD setup Advice

So after years of "I can't justify paying that much for one" I found a Samsung Pro Series 840 128Gb SSD in currys for £100 and decided to go for it.

Doing a little bit of research online, it looks like I don't need to enable TRIM as my BIOS is in ACHI mode anyway, but I should turn off hibernation and defrag?

Is this right? Anything else I should know?

If win7 detects it's a SDD.... it will disable defrag on that ssd by default.
Disabling hibernation saves disk space... on the other hand... a feature I use a lot. You decide if you enable/disable it.

Are you reinstalling win7 on SSD, or just clone the HDD?

It's actually Windows 8.1, so hibernation is a big factor.. I've left it on. I reinstalled Windows rather than cloning my HDD as I was due for a reinstall anyway but I did notice that when I went to turn defrag off it was calling it "optimisation" which just turned out to be TRIM so I've left that on as well.

Space isn't so much an issue, as it's a fairly big drive for what I'm using it for (just OS and programs), I've got 2.5Tb of spinners in this machine for everything else.

Your Samsung Pro series should have come with the Samsung Magician DVD. Install that & you can do a few things to optimise the SSD performance.

I have the 840 Pro 256Gb SSD & I actual run mine on the Maximum Reliability mode rather than Maximum Performance mode as I want it to last as long as possible.

Using the Magician will reset a lot of things on your computer such as disable hibernation, disable superfetch, reset your page file size, depending on which which settings you choose. Read through what happens in the various modes.

I use Windows 7 so I am not familiar with 8, but if as you say degrag is "optimisation" then make sure it does not run on your SSD as it will shorten it life quite a lot as this operation causes a huge number of reads & writes to the disc.

A fresh install onto the SSD would turn off defragging for that particular drive, as well as superfetch. I would fire up Samsung Magician and manually tune it the way I wanted.
