This morning my computer was fine. I left to go to work. My niece was at my place and she usually goes on my guest account to play and surf the web.

When i got home i was pretty dismayed to find a virus or something on my computer. it causes several things to happen.

1. when i turn on my laptop. after the load screen with the dell logo it goes to a screen with some stats on my comp and the option of pressing enter to continue or f12 for more load option. there is also an annoying repeating beep.

2. whenever i left click on a desktop shortcut it immediately opens several windows asking me if i really want to delete that shortcut.

3. a similar thing happens when i start the task manager. window open asking me if i really want to end whichever program is highlighted or clicked on. it stops me from using the task manager.

4. when i'm on the net whenever i type something. if i highlight the test it gets deleted.

does anyone have any idea what virus(or whatever it is) and how to fix it?
I've tried resetting to a previous save point but it won't let me. Any help would be appreciated.

PS i have Norton anti virus and it's not detecting anything wrong with my computer.

Do you have a windows 7 install disc? If so, you should be able to do a system restore while booted to the install disc.

Alternatively, tapping F8 during the BIOS splash screen (when the dell logo is displayed) should bring you to the advanced boot options, which you can also do a system restore from.

I'd like to try and figure out what this virus(or whatever it is) is and fixing it first. This way i can prevent it from happening again. If i don't get any info on it(and a way to fix it) by tomorrow I'll try a system restore.

Okay. lets try something else then. Use the F8 key like I described before, and boot into safe mode. Open msconfig (can be done through the start menu search bar), go to the startup tab. Look for anything that doesn't look like a program you installed, and disable it. You can actually disable everything in there, except any AV programs, if you want. You shouldn't have any major issues doing so. Then restart and boot into Windows normally. See if the symptoms remain after taking these steps. Then you need to run an AV scan. If your regular AV does not find anything, you can download and run MalwareBytes.

This actually makes the most sense out every possibility. I can't believe I didn't think of it.

Well, trit never responded, so we can't be 100% sure. But a lot of people never follow up.
