New WD harddisk and DVD drive doesn't recognize at same time.

Hi,
I just bought an additional internal harddisk of WD 500GB. Problem is when I attached it to additional port, hard disk is not recognized up in bios and also not in windows and linux also. But when I remove DVD drive and attached WD hard disk to it, then it recognizes. I tried every combination of SATA port and problem persists. I can either see my current HD and new HD or Current HD or DVD drive. I tried doing troubleshoot in storage management but new HD doesn't show up there. any help would be appreciated.

Hello potalibaba!

Does the WD drive work only when one of the other SATA devices is disconnected? Does it work with any of them together while connected? Does the drive show up at all in Disk Management and when? You've tried the drive on every port and the situation is the same?

If you get the drive to show up I would suggest you to check its health using the WD Data Lifeguard support, do both Quick and Extended tests, you could also have the drive externally connected for that.

If the tests take their dedicated time to work, the long test should take some more time, and pass the drive, then I would suppose the problem is either that your PSU can't handle the Watts needed, or there is a problem with your motherboard.

Hi CKWD,
The problem is, I can see only any two drives at same time. For example, right now I have running HD in port 1 and WD harddisk in port 2 and DVD drive in port 3. in My Computer, Storage management and in BIOS, I cannot see DVD drive. If I swipe the port of DVD drive and WD drive, then WD is not detected. SO summarize situation again,

1st scenario
Port 1 - Running HD
Port 2 - WD drive
Port 3 - DVD drive
Result: DVD drive is not visible in computer management and not even in BIOS

2nd scenario
Port 1- Running HD
Port 2- DVD Drive
Port 3- WD drive
Result: WD drive not visible in computer managment and not in BIOS

3rd Scenario
Port 1- RUnning HD
Port 2- DVD drive
Port 4 - WD Drive
REsult: WD drive not visible in computer managment and not in BIOS


4th Scenario
Port 1- Running HD
Port 2- DVD drive
Port 5 - WD Drive
Result: WD drive not visible in computer management and not in BIOS

5th Scenario
Port 1- Running HD
Port 2- DVD drive
Port 6 - WD Drive
Result: WD drive not visible in computer management and not in BIOS

In above scenarios, If I swap position of DVD drive and WD drive, then either DVD drive is visible or WD drive is visible.

So that means that for some reason your settings are to have up to two SATA devices connected. Or at this point only two SATA devices are at all supported. Have there ever been more than two SATA devices connected to this motherboard in this system, before now?

I've looked into your motherboard, you have two chipsets. Are you using the two SATA III ports and when connecting to the SATA II port, it's the inactive one? I would suggest you to try and connect all three SATA devices to the SATA II ports, from which you should have four. The SATA III ones are just two.

Also, make sure that you have been connecting the drives (previously, now and for ahead) to ports of the same chipset, not the Marvell one.

What happens then?

HI,
Yes, I have connected only 2 sata devices till date. This machine was bought in 2011, March somewhere. After that no changes were made to hardware.

regarding your questions in para 2, I will try tomorrow and will update you.

regarding question in part 3, how can I know which sata ports belongs to which chipset. is there any differentiatation

It depends on the motherboard but they should at least be colored differently. If you look at your motherboard's user manual, they should be listed and detailed there on a map of the board.
