My HP-2000 laptop's WiFi card died recently, and I had to order a new one. I used a USB WiFi adapter temporarily because the card took about a month to arrive.

My original card said "Replace with HP Spare #630703-001" and I chose the below card, which seems to be the exact same brand and model.

Amazon.com: Replacement for Hp Compaq Laptop 629883-001 630703-001 670286-001 670691-001 690980-001 691415-001 Ralink Rt5390 Half Mini Pcie Wlan Wireless Wifi Card Module: Computers & Accessories

Now I have the card. I shut down my computer and installed it as according to this video:

I started my computer, but it almost immediately gave me this message:

Wireless Module not supported
The system has detected a Wireless module installed in the system is not supported. System halted. Please remove device and restart.
WLAN Module ID (702)

The website was not very helpful.

Can anyone explain to my why I can't get my wifi card to work, and how I can fix the problem?

Thanks!

That is an odd message for sure; it apparently came from the BIOS and not from Windows. I dunno what to say PTH except to maybe unplug it, root around the BIOS to see if there's an Enable/Disable for the WiFi, Disable it, verify you can boot OK, then replug and see if it boots. If it boots but Windows can't see it, then reboot to BIOS and re-Enable the card.

PS that you get this msg apparently from BIOS causes me to wonder if the original card truly had died, or if there was some setting that got hosed maybe. How old is the laptop? I've seen some very odd things occur when the internal CMOS battery for the BIOS gets depleted.

What's BIOS? :P

The laptop is about 3.5 to 4 years old. All of the symptoms seemed to indicate that the WiFi card was dead, and matched up with what I was reading online. It boots fine with the original card in it, so there's got to be something different between these cards.

Does anyone know what the problem might be with my WiFi card? Or can I at least get a layman's translation of maxseven's post? :P

Otherwise I'm going to have to look for some professional, probably expensive help. My USB substitute is not strong enough to reach to my bedroom, and I need my USB port back. Don't make me stay downstairs with the noisy children! It's torture down here!
