Hello, I am currently using a Gateway E-4610D Desktop Tower with a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz

Here are the full specs for anyone that needs it.

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz
Memory (RAM) DDR2 4.00 GB
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 7650 GS 256 Dedicated (Dual DVI Monitors)
Primary hard disk (60GB Total) SSD
Secondary hard disk (1TB Total) HHD

I have had trouble in the past when upgrading or replacing CPU's/Processors and I bought the wrong one so I just want to be positive that this can fit and work on my system so that is why I am asking you guys.

Welcome to Seven forums.

From the board specs it says it supports Core™2 Extreme CPUs, so it seems you are good to go. The faster FSB may indeed help the machine bit not the higher clock speed.

You can still buy LGA775 chips?

One thought: check the motherboard's website for BIOS updates and check to see if a newer BIOS is needed to run newer processors. The update will say something like "Supports new processors", but it won't tell you which ones. So if there is a newer BIOS available and it supports new processors you should install that before the switch.

Some boards are limited to the CPU wattage it will support, mostly for AMD's I think. Cooling solutions would be another factor to think about. If there is no overclocking the stock one will be fine. Also as TVeblen points out be sure to check the BIOS for support too.

You should contact Gateway support, and ask them. Many of the "off the shelf" pc makers limit the bios, so it may, or may not work.
