Nightly disconnect issues

Hello folks,

I had this problem earlier this week and it started up again, which has something to do when the DHCP renew/release occurs every night. All of a sudden, it just started starting in September after 6 months of solid connections but I don't know what to do to restore stability to this Windows 7 machine (upgraded in Sept from WinXP, had NO problems). Only the ethernet connections appear to suffer from this and the wireless connections are unaffected.

Router replacement didn't help, hard restarting to factory settings didn't help but switching to the free ethernet slot helped for a few weeks before it started happening again several nights ago. The TVs are also unaffected so this may be isolated to ethernet connections only or even this computer alone.

I cannot add in a NIC to my PCI slot since the video card fan is blocking it, so I cannot do that and stuck with the Realtek PCIe GBE NIC with driver dated October 25th, 2010.

I am not entirely sure but it could be drivers (already tried newest, didn't help) or something with the LAN lease that is bumping me off in the evening hours. Whenever I do drop and 'fix' with Troubleshooting, it generally says it fixed something to do with Default Gateway not avail...so that might give a lead on this.

I already posted this issue over on the Verizon forums to try and get some help but decided to post my problem here to see if I can get help here as well.

So doing anything to restore the connection stability would be greatly appreciated.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
FIOS 30/30 & TV
Actiontec MI424WR router
ASUS M3A78-EM

EDIT: Issue has arised again as of March 2011.

I definitely know I dropped between midnight and 1am this morning so I left some logs from event viewer here below if that might help, starting from latest to earliest..

I have a feeling I will drop again sometime between 7pm and midnight, possibly more than once which is the part that irritates me the most.

ASUS M3A78-EM

There are other threads from Technet and this forum with this same "The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted during detection because a critical control file could not be opened."problem, they all seemed to have one thing in common, they were all upgrade installations.

I read three different threads to the end with no clear resolution to the problem.

The only fix that seemed to work was a Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Which will most likely fix this problem once and for all.

Ahh man, I really don't want to go to step 1...

Someone else said it might be DNS proxying of the Actiontec router that is causing these issues but want to leave reinstalls as an absolute final resort.

So I went 3 days without a drop and BAM, hit with one around 8:20/20:20 this evening, and found some info in the Event Viewer for those who know what it means..

The client was unable to validate the following as active DNS server(s) that can service this client. The server(s) may be temporarily unavailable, or may be incorrectly configured. 192.168.1.1

and

The Network Diagnostics Framework has completed the diagnosis phase of operation. The following repair option was offered:

Helper Class Name: IGDHelperClass

Root Cause: The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the Internet is broken
The network gateway is accessible, but Windows couldn’t receive network traffic from the Internet.

Root Cause Guid: {a3344881-8c07-4ba0-8965-5f29cde56820}

Someone elsewhere said this could be the issue of DNS proxying by the router, can this even be turned off?

Root Cause Guid: {a3344881-8c07-4ba0-8965-5f29cde56820}

Someone elsewhere said this could be the issue of DNS proxying by the router, can this even be turned off?

DNS "proxying" ?? Your routers IP 192.168.1.1 is the private IP for it.

Can you go to start and type cmd>right click and run as admin> IPCONFIG /ALL

and upload the output to us.

I suspect it is an IPv6 configuration issue. Are you using "homegroup" for networking?

I'm not sure but there is a slight chance of problem causing from your network adapter drivers. I've an asus mainboard and in the past i have some problems which looks like your's. Try to delete your network adapter and it's drivers under device manager then scan your computer for new hardware. Win7 should load the stablest driver. Then try all that again. By the way you should check your bios for AI NET. It should be seen under "Tools Menu" tab at Bios Menu. Make sure AI NET is disabled. I hope this helps you.

I just did the driver removal and it installed the June 2010 Realtek driver, which is the same exact one I am having issues with, as was the October(?) ones before updating it earlier. I also checked the BIOS for AI NET, and it is set to disabled.

just going to put this out there..

but have you turn off the power management on the NIC you are using?
if not, i think when it is left idle it will Disconnect you.. unless this is a random disconnection problem, then i would point to your ISP/Line Quality. there is alot of things that can play a part in connection dropping.. most of the time it is Router,Ethernet Cable,NIC card & settings,Drivers ect

if you can test this on another computer to see if it does this, then you could rule out the computer side, and the work on the router/cable ect..

alos you could try Opendns servers.
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

put them in your router and save. see if that is any better if you ain't doen this already ;/

just my £0.01 worth..

also check this out as said already, it could be the IPv6...

I already ruled out power management on the NIC as I turned it off 3 days ago, as I went disconnect free up until last night...which was kinda strange if you ask me.

On the OpenDNS, I may give that a shot if the 4.2.2.6 and 4.2.2.7 DNS servers do not help at all.

Good thing I have spare ethernet cables to test this theory to see if it's this computer alone and not the router.

On IPv6, I may have unchecked it once..or do I have to uninstall it off the adapter?

And on that last option, I don't think I've done that as I may try that if all else fails.

Okay, a small update...the laptop ethernet connection did not drop, only my desktop...which means it is definitely isolated to this computer.

IPV6 is disabled yet I still dropped.

Edit #2: Did this at reply 1 to see if that helps at all.

Okay, after a week of no dropping, it decides to drop in the morning hours when I was asleep. Gah.

I am close to giving up at this point after all the things I have done to try and curb this issue..

EDIT: There was something I noticed but it has the gateway's IP under the DNS server listing..is that normal.

Going with manual configuration right now to see if anything helps...

Update 12/23/10 @ 2:51PM EST

So far I have not dropped at all since configuring a static IP for this machine..if I can surpass 7 days or more without any interruption, I will be happy and would consider this issue resolved (unless anything else pops up).

Sorry for bumping a 3 and a half month old thread but these issues have popped up again but at a slightly less annoying way...I do have the little disconnect but I don't need to go to Network & Sharing as it gets restored in less than 30 seconds.

Irritating? Yes. Do I want to permanently stop this, hell yes I do.

Not a whole lot has changed systemwise since it started happening less than a week ago. Any help would be appreciated again.
