NIVIDA graphics card problem can't install win 7

Hi there,

I have just been given a custom built pc and i'm not sure what everything is inside but from what i can see

Motherboard is a Gigabyte MA770T - UD3
Graphics card is a NIVIDA GeForce 8800 GTS
I can't read anything else for now.

I don't know what it is but when i was given this pc it was working fine with Win8, then something happened and suddenly i had lines and stripes in the background. Seeing as it was a new formatted pc i tried to reinstall win8 from the disk but the disk has a problem and won't install. Friends have advised me to go with Win7 as they have done so i bought both Win7 Prof including service pack 1 32bit and 64bit.

Steps taken...
Disk in pc, start pc, press any key.
Accept terms, click ok.
Enter language details, click ok
Click install.

Runs through set up, expands files and reboots all the way to the last part ' completing installation ' and then i get a black screen and nothing more, even when i left it for over 2 hours to see if it just needed time.

I understand it could be a ram issue so i now have only one board in at 4gig, but i get the same results, so i tried to take out the graphics card but my monitor connects using the graphics card port so i can't do it.

Is there someone who can guide me through this nightmare, i just want a machine that works.

So what bit version 7 did you install mate and for the sytem info you can run Speccy Speccy - Download < download from piriform or for more dtailed specs run HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download < get the right version > run it close the right hand window and in the left hand window you can open out the devices and see really detailed stuff sometimes Speccy will not see pic for an example.

Hi Sue,

It's possible that your graphics card has failed. Do you have another one around, or can you borrow one from a friend to swap into the machine and see if that is the problem?

Given that you suddenly had lines and stripes, and the fact that that is an older card, it may have just bit the dust and that's what is killing your install.

What connections do you have on your monitor and motherboard? It may be a possibility to connect from your onboard graphics via an adaptor. That way you could try to install Windows and prove/disprove the GPU.

I checked the OP's motherboard spec and it doesn't have an onboard GPU, unfortunately.

Hmm strange eh but I wonder if the CPU has some graphical capabilities? APU?

PS Perhaps Sue could check with HW Info on that CPU dofr us.

Sorry John, but that motherboard only supports the old AM3 series chips. No graphical capabilities in that product line.

It's a shame, really. It would have made it so easy to rule out the graphics card.

Yep it is mate I wonder what PSU Sue has as that GPU is showing up a minimum of 400 watts usage GeForce 8800 GT | Specifications | GeForce

A quick run with HW Info could tell us that and also what it is putting out

Using HW Info

You can test the volts on the PSU with HWInfo HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 -Download < download the right bit version andclose the right hand window select Sensors and scroll down to the power sectionwhere you will see what the volts are doing see my pic. If you scroll further down that list it will show details of what the GPU is pulling and at what volts it is

The original right hand window shows themachine running and is handy for that but for looking at the components in some detail close it and use themain left hand side panel

FOR OTHER COMPONENTS

Open each + down into the componentitself and then click on it - in theright hand side will appear all sorts of details including brands speeds andother essential info that device. See pic for example.
