Hey Everyone,
I have recently finished building myself a P.C. When I first used it I noticed it had no sound. There was a cross over the sound icon and it said no audio output device installed.

On running Dxdiag there seems to be nothing at all under "sound", even though I know I have integrate realtek HD audio.

Under system information (msinfo32), however, it says that under sound device there is a sound card, but it says "status: error".

In device manager, in sound, video and game controllers, it has the realtek card there, but with a yellow exclamation mark next to it. Under properties it says that it "cannot start. (code 10)". It says that the drivers for it are up to date, but even so I downloaded the most recent realtek audio driver to make sure. This made no difference, although I am not sure it installed properly as device manager still says that the default windows driver is in place.

I have speakers that work and I have checked alot of things to see if they are okay, including clean installs and the such, but my computing knowledge is extremely limited and I was wondering if anyone could suggest anything I could check or do or buy to make my sound work.

Thanks very much for your time, Telstar

code 10 sounds like a driver problem. Have you tried to go to properies and uninstalling the hardware then restarting the pc. maybe it will find the driver that you dloaded from real tec. What version was that because I do see a driver for win7 x32 listed for your device and that is v r2.31 ?

When I uninstall the driver the whole heading of "sound video and game controllers" disappears with the device and when I restart it there is still nothing there. I should point out that the only way that it was there in the first place was because I added it manually by clicking "add legacy hardware" from the action menu on device manager.

Also I dont know whether it could be a UAA I need but a friend suggested that to me and I dont know whether I need/already have one of them.

Thanks, Telstar

P.S. yes, the driver I downloaded was the new real tek 2.31

Yes, I downloaded the zip file and extracted it into
C:\Program Files\realtek and then I ran the setup, it said it had installed it fine, but then I restarted and it had made no difference to my sound. I dont know whether or not this is because it is a different problem or because I did not install the driver properly. The only other thing to note is when I go on to the details tab in the properties of the device, when I choose the problem code from the drop-down menu it comes up with the code: 0000000A
I have also had a couple of STOP errors where this code is repeated and followed by some other codes. I dont know whether that helps at all.
Thanks for your time, Telstar

No I am afraid that this did exactly the same as running the setup normally. Is there any way of checking that the driver has installed and it is the downloaded driver not the windows one? this could help target the problem. Also, I should add that under device manager at the moment there is not even a heading of sound, video and game controllers, so I dont whether my computer has actually recognized the integrated sound card, especially as there isnt anything in msinfo32 either.

Are you right clicking the driver and selecting run as administrator when you install? Does not sound like the driver is installing.

I have tried running as administrator and normally, neither work. However, in control panel/uninstall a program, I can see it there once i have installed it. I have a feeling the problem is more to do with the sound card not being detected at all, and this would explain why the drivers arent making any difference, aswell as why there is no info for sound cards in dxdiag, msinfo32 and device manager. Is there any reason why this could be?
Thanks, Telstar
