No boot, No safe Mode, No anything..help

My daughters Dell Inspiron N5040 running windows 7 home is crashed. you push the start button, it tries to boot but ends up on the "windows error Recovery" screen from there you can "launch Startup Repair" or "Start windows normally". Choosing either one just takes you back to the same screen.. F8 gives me all the safe mode options but it ends up going back to the "windows error recovery" screen again. I downloaded a ISO windows 7 but it won't book to the DVD or Jump drive. I'm at my wits end.. she don't have the original windows 7 disc or recovery disc.. any thoughts? thanks in advance

Hey turbomike,

Not having a recovery disk can be an issue. Try logging onto Dells website and see if you can get a recovery disc off there. And many ISO's online are modified or illegal so dont trust those. If those dont work, contact your local computer repair store and see if they sell recovery discs. Thats your best bet.

Hi remove the battery for a little while,
While the battery is removed hold down the power button for 30 to 45 seconds this will drain the existing power in the unit,
Wait another few minutes and reattach the battery,
Use option 2,

thanks for the replies... Seem I can't locate the recovery disc on Dell's site. service tag is 2M62JP1

I tried the remove the battery and power down suggestion.. no luck.

its so odd I can F8 to get to the safe mode menu, but the unit will not go into safe mode or any option

I am not sure if this will help, but try selecting "Disable Automatic Restart on boot failure" or something very much like that. Maybe you're returning to the same screen after an abbreviated reboot?

Well your either completely infected or the hard drive is shot,
Stand by for a specialist in this type of issue,
In the mean time repeat power drain leave the battery out longer and hold down the power button longer no more than a minute though,
Leave the battery out all night if you don't get a reply this evening,
Cheers.

Add which Security suite is installed and any other programs not installed with windows.
And anything recent changes new programs.....

I am not sure I understand this. You can use Rufus to put the .iso on a stick.

I downloaded Rufus.. used it on the laptop and now have a C: prompt.. now what do I do?

Hey this might not do anything but try one of these I would begin with the Kaspersky one

5 Bootable AntiVirus Rescue CD for Windows: Free Download if there is anything lurking at boot then maybe it will can the thing.

Reboot and tap the F12 key, boot into Dell Diagnostics or Utility Partition to run Dell Hardware Diagnostics from F12 Menu. Make sure you choose the one which has all hardware tests offered since some will have a short test choice. Report back findings.
