No Desktop image

I am running windows 7 & I had a picture for my desktop background which has now disappeared; it is completely black. If I try to assign a personal photo or even a default photo from the windows choices already on the computer, when I click on "make this my desktop background" nothing happens, just goes away & doesn't do it. Can someone tell me why this is & how to fix it?

Check the drivers and graphic card.
