I am unable to use my headphones with my windows 7 64 bit HP Elitebook 8440 notebook. There is no option to even configure it

Any suggestions on how i get headphones to work on this device?

Pockettes welcome to the Seven Forums.

It might be a new laptop, but it doesn't have the audio drivers installed. Give away on that is that any time you see the audio device listed as "high definition audio device", it is running on the default Windows audio driver and not the proper driver from the manufacturer. The default windows driver is enough to provide basic sound and not much else.

In your case go here,

HP EliteBook 8440p Notebook PC -  Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

to get the IDT audio driver for it (the first one listed, dated 29 Oct, 2010).
