I had to replace my computer zso I b ought a Dell Optiplex used. I tried to use the sound recorder and it seems that I don't have An internal m,microphone. Actually the message is that it's not plugged in. that sounds like i have to use an external mic. it doesn't seem like that would work with sound recorder. don't all computers have an internal mic? if not, could i install one or take the one that's in my old computer?

Most computers, other than laptops, do not have an internal mic.

The easiest thing to do is to pick up a headset with a mic in it, or you can buy a stand alone desk mic for the PC. Both of those will work with Sound Recorder.

You don't need a microphone to record music from the internet (what you are hearing on the PC speakers), if you have "Stereo Mix" (called System Mixer on some older models).
Check the Sound Panel, Recording Section. If Stereo Mix is shown, set that as the default Recording device. If it is not shown, RIGHT click in a blank area of the panel and then click to show Disabled and Disconnected Devices. If you now have Stereo Mix showing, set that as the default recording device.

FWIW, The Dell OptiPlex line is one of their "Business" system PC's.

Here is an Example:

One issue. The "High Definition Audio Device" suggests you do not have the correct sound hardware driver installed. The generic, basic function, Windows installed High Definition Audio drivers do not have Stereo Mix.

Do you know what hardware sound you have? Post the exact HP model number and I'll check to see what you have (and if a Vista/Win 7 driver is available).

The Realtek drivers are available on the Dell downloads.

It shouldn't matter what you are using, a receiver or speakers for this function.

Here is the link to the Dell downloads. Download and Install the Realtek drivers. Then see if you can set Stereo Mix as default recording device.
