NO SOUND and my Realtek HD Audio will not open from the control panel

Windows 7 86. I have NO SOUND and my Realtek HD Audio will not open from the control panel. I have reinstalled the drivers and used system image to recover but it has not solved the problem. I have used this system image before and it work perfect. I think it is a hardware problem but how can I check this or what other option may I have not considered? Please help.

What error is showing in the Device Manager (assuming it has a problem).

There is no error showing because it is no longer listed in the device manager. I can only see the realtek HD Audio under Contol Panel / All Control Panel Items but when I click on it nothing happens at all.

I uninstall and installed again but nothing has changed.

If it is not in the Device Manager it is not there or being detected by Windows. Check the BIOS to see if the Integrated Audio has been disabled.

In Bios it shows audio enabled and when I press an in appropriate selection the computer beeps this is the first and only sound I have heard from my computer since this problem started.

There is a separate "beeper" on the motherboard. It is only there for diagnostics or BIOS, BEFORE Windows loads.

Do you see any audio entries in the Device Manager? such as HD Audio Codec?

It could be a hardware problem since its not showing up at all in the Device Manager, however it could also be a Windows problem and if its a Windows problem it may take a complete reinstall, back to the original factory setup. I don't know about HP but most PC vendors provide a way to completely reinstall.

There is a red X over the speaker icon next to the clock and battery meter.

The beep you hear in the BIOS is a small "beeper" on the motherboard for diagnostics. It has nothing to do with the regular PC audio.

In the Device Manager, what is showing under "Sound Video and Game Controllers" ?

This link appears to be the drivers for Vista, for your PC. HP does not have Win 7 specific drivers however the Vista drivers should work OK. Download the Intel chipset drivers, and the RealTek drivers listed. Install the chipset drivers first, restart the PC and then install the RealTek and see what happens. After you install the RealTek, check the Device Manager and see if its listed.

After spending several hours of "no sound 5.1 troubleshooting", I looked at the manual for my new P8Z77-V motherboard and noticed the plugs in a different pattern. Instead of "3 in a row of "orange, black, gray", it was "orange, black, green". The "gray plug" goes in the "green port".
Now I have perfect sound.
