No sound in players

Until yesterday all was good but suddenly the sound stopped working in players (AIMP, Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player). AIMP's play button has no effect, MPC's slider just moves but nothing comes out and WMP gives an error saying "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem while playing the file". Movies do the same, image shows but no sound (MPC).

The messenger, firefox, games or other apps have sound. When I test the speakers using the windows utility I hear the "tada" tune but nothing comes out when testing with the Realtek utility.

I tried using the generic driver from microsoft but although the slider moves and the spectrum analyzer has activity, I hear nothing.

I have the latest drivers, nothing is muted. Please help.
Thanks in advance

The Mobo is Asus M2V with ALC660 audio codec.

I'd attempt uninstalling all drivers and then downloading the latest ones from the manufacturer's website.

Have you tried forcing a re-install?

Go to device manager, locate your sound chip... UNINSTALL IT then reboot.
When Windows loads back up it should locate and reinstall the drivers automatically.

It's possible you had a corrupted registry setting or file...

Thanks for the reply. Tried it, windows just installs "Digital audio(S/PDIF) - High Definition Audio Device" and it doesn't solve the problem. With it I have no sound at all.

So, your speakers aren't being detected for some reason or another...

I've had a similar problem early on, the Realtek drivers acted like I was plugging/unplugging my speakers, the codec kept resetting and glitching, intermittent sound.

Turned the PC off, unplugged and replugged my speakers 7 or 8 times to make sure the contacts wore off any oxidation. That seemed to do it, I then used the Realtek control panel to disable front panel jack detection and any pop-up dialogs.

Right click on the small folder in the upper right of the Realtek control panel, also right click on the graphic simulation of the back/front panel jacks.

Tried replugging... No success. I tried to find a setting to deactivate the front panel but I had no success.
I just can't explain how this got to happen: why would anything but the players and the Realtek Utility have sound?

I disabled Digital Output because it has no effect on anything.

I see a green bar to the right of the speakers, it's pegged at the very highest output level, were you playing something when you took the snapshot?

Oh, de-select "Virtual Surround" it won't do you any good, it's for different type speaker systems. (5.1...etc)

Your speakers are plugged into the light green output jack in the back?

Also, make aure there are no sound effects or enhancements.
For now, set your format to 16-bit - 44.1kHz.

One other thing... in your first graphic panel, try setting the speaker configuration to something other than stereo, then switch it back to stereo.

Thanks a LOT! It seems to have a problem when "Disable all sound effects" is not checked... Strange!

Which means... one of the enabled sound effects is not working or has been accidently adjusted so that it is not passing audio.

I only used Environment (Living Room), Equalizer (Powerful) and Loudness Equalisation. Tried with unchecked Disable... and unchecked effects and the problem's there.
