No sound when headset is plugged in

Hello all,

I am on laptop using Windows 7 home premium 64bit. There is sound when nothing is plugged into the audio jack, but when something is plugged, there is no sound.

I am using also Kubuntu on the same laptop, and the sound works perfectly even when a headset is plugged in the audio jack. So apparently the problem is with the driver.
Also the headset does not appear in my Playback devices at all (neither as disabled/disconnected) (although a notification comes up when I plug a headset in saying that something was plugged into it).

I've been searching for this problem for a long time, and could not find a solution for it.
I tried downloading the driver from dell.com, I even tried re-installing windows all along. Nothing works.

After using windows for the first time after re-installing it, the headset worked properly (even without the official driver installed), but it stopped working upon a restart, which is when I tried installing the driver from dell.com which didn't work.

Please help, this problem is driving me crazy..!
Thanks a lot,
rand

If you mean there is no speaker sound when a headset is plugged in, that is the normal configuration. Some PC sound systems have an option to either mute or not mute the speakers when a headset is plugged in. Depending on what sound you have and the control panel for it that may or may not be an option.

There is a Dell "N"5030 and an "M"5030. Which do you have?

Speaker works fine, but when i plug in a headset, there will be no voice in the headset (headset works and the audio jack works too since they both work Kubuntu)

The headset doesn't even appear in the playback devices.

Sorry for not explaining it right. (first time trying out the forums)
Thanks for your quick reply!

There are two different sound drivers listed on the Dell downloads, depending on whether you have an "N"5030 or "M"5030. Are you sure you downloaded the correct driver?

I downloaded the driver using the Dell Service Tag, which is supposed to be unique for my laptop. I also tried downloading the Dell software that detects which drivers I should take. Both failed.

My laptop is Dell Inspiron N5030

I don't know a thing about linux but the concept should be the same. Have you tried setting your speakers as the default audio device?

Here is the link directly to the sound driver download for the N5030. Note the instructions for downloading and installing.
Click on "Download File" DO NOT use the Add to My Download List as the Dell Download Manager doesn't always work properly.

Collin2011, he has stated that the speaker works OK, so the "Speakers" would be set as the default playback device.

Alright, this is really weird.

So I downloaded the driver you told me, which was the same name as the driver installed, but still i proceeded with it (maybe its a better version).
So it told me if I want to remove the current driver, reboot, then install this one. so I did so.
Now for the weird part; after removing the driver and rebooting, windows found and installed a driver on its own, i tested if sound comes out from the headphones, and yes it did! But still the headphones did not appear in the playback devices.(neither does a notification come up when I plug in the headphones)

Now I installed the driver you posted, rebooted, and again, sound came out from headphones and all is good. Except headphones still do not appear in the playback devices. (but a notification comes up now when I plug it in)

I am afraid that this might stop working after some time (just like I did when i re-installed Windows)
Is it normal for the headphones not to appear in the playback devices? Is there a way to fix it?

Thanks for all your help guys!

I have RealTek on my desktop PC. When I plug in the Headphones I get a notice they were plugged in, but they DO NOT show up on the Sound/Playback panel. Just my "Speakers" and options for digital (S/PDIF).

The sound in headphones worked up until yesterday, it stopped working today.
Now i am back to square one.. apparently that wasn't a good enough solution..
I should note that I did not install anything.

Please help!

I found a way to solve the problem, though I don't think its very good for the computer.

When I start the computer, there would be no sound in my headphones. but if i force shut down (holding the shut down external button on my laptop, not from windows) the computer and restart it, the headphones will work.

Is there any other way on how to fix this? This way of resolving the problem is extreme and I think it will ruin the computer in time.

Best I can tell you is to post the problem on the Dell Laptop hardware section. Maybe one of the tech's there, who are more familiar with the Dell Laptops, can help you.
