I have a Dell Inspiron laptop model 1764 that will not boot to windows. The error code given is 4400:011A. I do not hear the hard drive spin so I'm thinking it's dead. I received two disks when I purchased the computer and I'm wondering if These 2 disks (reinstallation of operating system & drivers & utilities) will put the computer back as original with a new hard drive. I know I've lost all programs on the computer but I don't have anything on it that can't be replaced by disk or transfered from the one I'm using now. Also, the present drive is a 500 GB with 5400RPM. Can I get a 500GB with 7200RPM. I know the 7200 uses more power but I rarely use this laptop on just battery anyhow. If I do, it's for less than an hour.
Thanks in advance to anyone with more knowledge than me.
Dave

Yes those disks will put your machine "back as original". A much much better way would be a clean install though. Here's how to do that if you haven't before. We have many excellent tutorials here at the forums, written by some very knowledgeable people. Just click on the link : http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html

And yes, I would go for the fastest spinner I could get/afford if not an ssd. There's many 500GB 7200 HDD's out there so shop and compare. Here's a sample page from TigerDirect, they seem to be running around $60.00 USD. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/search.asp?keywords=500gb+internal+hard+drive

Looks like my HD wasn't dead after all. I just couldn't hear it. After working on it for hours, I got to do a reinstall using Dell Data Safe. It broght it back to "as new" but as I said, there's nothing important that can't be replaced. All I need now is the time to update it (so far 146 windows updates) and updates for everything else. Thanks for the help

Hi dach162,

As you are getting error on the harddrive I believe it requires replacing. You can continue using it if you want but make sure you have the backup of the data on the system as it may fail in near future.

If your system is within warranty then let me know I can arrange for the harddrive to be replaced for you. Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.

I did a dskchk on the drive and found one error. I cleaned it out and now have no errors. Could it really be a bad drive with only about 100 hours worth of usage in 3 years? Never been banged around or dropped. I use it while camping in a motor home. I have no idea on how to back up the drive that is partitioned into C & D that has only 34.6 G used on drive C and 58 G used on drive D. Then, If I knew how to back it up, I still don't know how to re-input it all onto another drive.

Hi dach162,

Honestly, harddrive might work for sometime but if we receive an error while running diagnosing we go ahead and replace the harddrive for our customers.

You can continue using the harddrive till it fails completely. There are many backup softwares available. Check the dell datasafe local backup which can create a backup image of the system:

You can use windows utility as well:

I hope I was able to answer your query today. If you have any further queries, please feel free to contact us.
