I can't get a WU screenshot because it doesn't get that far; WU, BITS and WMI are running though. However, it has only ever appeared as a Red Shield without any error codes whatsoever. Windows Explorer has stopped working (Not Responding).

My problem started recently where my WU became corrupted and no longer works. Along with this sundry other Windows functions have also gone down the pan.

Having exhausted all fixes, sfc scans, Microsoft Helpdesks incl. remote, Toshiba - Intel - Seagate forums, I have been trying without success to download a fix that promises to address my particular problem.

My laptop originally came directly from Toshiba with the Vista abomination installed, then Toshiba sent me update disks for Win 7 - thus I have a fully valid OEM Win 7 SP1 32bit OS running on my laptop, viz. 2 Microsoft Helpdesk visits in the wee hours this morning.

However, I cannot run the validation exe and retrieve the code necessary to download the KB982018 patch, for the reasons given above: Catch 22. I tried to explain this to the 2 Microsoft automatons, but it was beyond their remit of understanding.

Now could someone please download this sodding patch for me on my behalf and post it/email it to me so that I can try and resolve my problem?

You have a few problems... (one of which is an apparent inability to follow instructions).
You have a Tampered Service - which usually means that either the startup conditions or the permissions have been altered
You also have a problem possibly caused by faulty drivers.
You also have a number of problems with manifest files

Let's start with the service and see what we have...


Please open an Elevated (Administrator) Command Prompt window and use the following commands....

net start sppuinotify
sc qc sppuinotify
sc queryex sppuinotify
sc qprivs sppuinotify
sc qsidtype sppuinotify
sc sdshow sppuinotify

Copy and paste the output to your reply


Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Then the manifest file problems...

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

Ever since the database started its rebuild, the little backup icon on the Action Centre has lit up. Out of curiosity, I had a look at the state of partitions, and noted that my 70Gb partition (reserved for backups & system image) was 1.82Gb from filling up; so I deleted my previous backup (last modified some days ago, when I performed a recovery) to make space.

Bollox, I just noticed that the schedule has been turned on - when it had always been on manual. Must be from when Microsoft had its paws on it. All's well.

try this.
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder. find the Catroot2 folder there, and right-click on it - select Properties.

In the General tab, clear the box beside 'Read-only (Only.....' by clicking in it until it's empty (it cycles around three values)

Click Apply.
Accept any warnings that come up - if you get a 'Ignore/Ignore All/Try again' option, pick 'Ignore all'

(Note that the 'blob' will return after the process - this is normal)

Once complete (may be almost instantaneous),

reboot, and run another MGADiag report.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt and run the following commands...

REGSVR32 wintrust.dll

You should get a success popup.


reboot and run another MGADiag report.
