Yes, I ran the Winsock cmd then and I ran it again now.
I noticed that IE had gone on the blink a little after I began troubleshooting WU.
I use Maxthon browser, currently 4.3.1.2000.

I have always been able to reach the page & download the HTA, but it always returns this when I run it:

That almost sounds like a HOSTS infection.

Open Internet Options
Click on the Advanced tab
Click on the Restore advance settings button
Click on Apply.

Click on the Security tab - Click on 'Reset all zones to default level' - click Apply

Click on OK, If IE is open, close it
then open IE again - does this help at all?

No, unfortunately it doesn't.

Earlier this week, I asked whether I should reinsert my old HDD; after all, WU was working fine then.

I could then run MDIAG and you can compare results.

Unfortunately, that wouldn't help - I know what the MGADiag should look like, and I know what some of the causes of the error group you have are, but every now and then one crops up that the normal methods don't work on, and I have yet to isolate the cause.

I can't remember whether I've had a look at your event logs yet - if not, please follow these intsructions.


Please open Event Viewer
In the left pane, navigate to the Windows Logs
right-click on Applications and select 'Save all events as...' save as Apps.evtx
repeat for the System logs - save as Sys.evtx
Compress both files, and attach to your reply or upload to your favourite fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive/SkyDrive) and post a link in your reply

I'm almost certain that this will give an error - but the exact error it gives may be instructive.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

net stop cryptsvc
esentutl /p %systemroot%\System32\catroot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb

and then press ENTER.
Click OK to confirm that you should run this tool only on databases that are corrupt.
Type net start cryptsvc to start Cryptographic Services, and then press ENTER.

The post the results to your reply.

That confirms what I'd suspected - the CATROOT2 folder was never rebuilt after we renamed it.

So, the problem is firmly centred around that part of the OS - the question is how to deal with it, since the IRST drivers appear neither in the Device Manager (at least here), nor the Programs listing, which makes uninstalling then rather difficult.

Please check for the Intel Rapid Storage entry in the Programs & Features listing in Control Panel - if it's present, please try uninstalling it.

If it's not present, then look in Device Manager and see if there's an explicit entry for it there - if so, right-click on in and select Uninstall - follow the directions and then reboot.

If that's not present either, then I'll see if I can work up a protocol for forcing removal.

I've found it in programs and have initiated uninstallation, but it requires a reboot & will probably be installed straight away on restart. Won't it?

Shouldn't be reinstalled - the uninstall will remove the controlling programs, but not the actual drivers, which we'll check after you've had a look through Device Manager (DM)..
While in the DM, please look for an an entry that says something like
Intel(R) 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller ( It may be under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers)
Right-click on that, and select Properties

Click on the Details tab
in the Property dropdown selection options, pick 'Service'

What is the Value showing?

Click on the Driver tab - Who is the Driver Provider?
What date and version are the drivers?
Click on the Driver Details button - what is the driver file name there?

Those are the older set of drivers :( - the newer ones should still be installed (I thought)
That set is actually from well before Windows 7 was released and may not be compatible -

Please go back to that page, and click on the Uninstall Drivers button - if offered the option to delete the drivers, say NO (we want to try and force a reinstall after a reboot).
Now reboot (it'll probably ask you to anyhow).

After the reboot, you should find new drivers installing again.

One the drivers have finished installing, reboot again - twice - and post a new MGADiag report.

If you were offered the option to delete the drivers on uninstall, please run the procedure to do so again, this time deleting the drivers along the way (Note - the default MS driver should still be present, and install on the reboot).

this time, after the first reboot, run the procedure from post #9 again, then after the final reboot, run the procedure from post #51 again - post the new results, and a new MGADiag report.
