My son's PC crashes when he is playing Minecraft, Age of Empires HD, YouTube, and he reports problems with Java which show up when he's playing Minecraft. I couldn't discern a consistent cause from WhoCrashed. Any suggestions gratefully accepted. I attach a debug file.

Hello again Jim. :)

It appears that the display driver is very old.

Update it, but install version 13.9 WHQL only.

When the driver is updated, Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.

No difficulties with Furmark as far as I could see. PC has been on for three days and no crashes. My son returns tomorrow and will be using this computer for Minecraft and so on for the rest of this week as he is on school holidays. If it doesn't crash before the weekend I will chalk it up as another win for Arc and mark it 'solved'. Thanks again for your help. It is really appreciated.

Still crashing

PC crashed overnight. I attach a SF Diagnostic file. The graphic display was stopping and recovering a couple of times just now. I recall my son saying something to me about that. Also, I noticed that these three items are listed in Device Manager as 'Other devices' and marked with exclamation marks: Ethernet Controller; SM Bus Controller; Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller.

I have previously tested this RAM.

Verifier fun

A couple of days ago I decided to run verifier. I left it for 24 hours or so but the machine had frozen (possibly the graphics adapter?) and I restarted it. Since I couldn't remember how to read event viewer I had no choice but to just keep verifier going. I checked in just now, after 22 hours uptime and there have been no BSODs. My son has been using another box so the pc has just been running with no load.

I have disabled verifier now. Is that a mistake?

Have you tried running memtest86?
Failing RAM could be an issue here.

Memtest86 will test your RAM

   Information

Run Memtest86 for at least 8 passes so we get enough information to confirm that your RAM isn't failing

If you get errors then you'll need to swap your RAM sticks around to determine whether or not it's the RAM sticks or motherboard DIMM slots.

If the output is like this then you have bad RAM so the stick(s) need replacing.

Test|Slot 1|Slot 2
RAM 1| Error | Error
RAM 2|Good|Good

If the output is like this then you should replace the motherboard, however you can leave that DIMM slot empty although it's not advised to use a system with a faulty motherboard.

Test|Slot 1|Slot 2
RAM 1| Error |Good
RAM 2| Error |Good

What USB devices have you got plugged in?

The RAM has been memtest+-ed previously. The box has the usual usb wifi dongle. Are these things the tools of the devil? Maybe I should just buy a new adapter, they are pretty cheap now. I am concerned about the graphics freeze problem and I have had no luck googling a solution. The problems are likely to be completely unrelated, speaking as an engineer (not).

What settings had you got running with driver verifier?
Can you also enable driver verifier but only enable the options: Standard settings and IRP logging step 3.
Don't enable Force Pending I/O Reuqests

Enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier -Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information

Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, and so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

   Warning

Before enabling DV, make sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there are no points, make a System Restore Point Manually before enabling DV.

   Tip

  • If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there. Now boot normally again, and try following the instruction of enabling DV again.
  • If you cannot boot in Safe mode too, do a System Restore to a point you made earlier.

Let us know the results, with the subsequent crash dumps, if any.

Are there still exclamation marks in the device manager? If so you will have to install the correct driver.
If there are exclamation marks what devices are they on?

Battling on

Doing this sort of troubleshooting from another residence with the happy bonus of the pc being at one's ex-wife's house is tricky. However, I can report that a while back I got to 7 passes of memtest before domestic drama caused the pc to be turned off. I decided to spend a little money and buy a different usb wifi adapter. I also checked Device Manager and fixed some problems with uninstalled drivers. I think it is looking good. I will, of course, advise if it is solved. And thanks for your advice folks.

New Info

I have the computer at my palatial flat to work on getting it right. I ran verifier it the way suggested by the Doctor and it crashed a short time ago. I have uploaded the dump info. I have also uploaded the information from 11th July and before. I would be grateful for any advice. Please note: I did a clean install of win 7 when I brought the pc to my place a few days ago to clear the decks as it were.

That is from Avast self protection driver

Jim, Do you have Avast as a AV program? the other files I am seeing right now are Microsoft system files, which never cause BSODs unless the system files are corrupted or the DVD used to install Windows have been tampered with.

I know you mentioned earlier that the computer in question is at another house. Do you have access to that computer now? Also, please tell me where you got the DVD or the ISO file that you used to installed Windows ? Also, are the system specs in the bottom left of your post yours or are they the computer in question? I need the system info, in detail, of the system having issues. In the mean time would you run a short system file checker for me?

Open a elevated command prompt ( click start, type cmd in the search box, right click on the cmd entry and select run as administrator) in the black box that opens, copy/paste sfc /scannow. If you decide to type it, notice the space between the sfc and the /. It is a system file checker which will scan your system files and attempt to correct any missing or corrupt files. What we want are the results to say windows found no integrity violations. If it says files were found but could not be repaired, close the box, reboot and run it again, after opening the administrative command prompt. You may have to reboot and run it three times for it to repair all system files. If it can't repair them after 3 reboots, let us know.

The reason I am asking a lot of questions about your installation media is because I am seeing too many references to Microsoft Windows system drivers getting blamed or bring referenced with other drivers. In my experience, that is not normal. There seems that something else is going on there that isn't being told in the dump files.

If you would, please advise me of any and all problems you are having with the computer, no matter how small they are. Are the crashes happening when one particular program is being used or is there one specific game your Son plays that causes the BSODs and other games do not cause problems? I'm looking for a common denominator to try to narrow down the problem. It seems to me that every crash has a different stop code and a different driver blamed. That indicates to me that none of the driver named is the actual cause of the problem, I know you said you have run memtest86+ to death, but in my experience when all the stop codes are different, in most case it is the ram causing the problem. When programs hit a bad spot in the ram, the computer crashes and whatever driver is being used most prominently gets the blame. However, it really could be something else entirely.

After following and answering essenbe post could you explain what this means from post # 5

(possibly the graphics adapter?)
What graphic adapter?

I haven't been able to find the computer specs on the troubled computer.
From post #1

My son's PC crashes when he is playing Minecraft, Age of Empires HD, YouTube, and he reports problems with Java which show up when he's playing Minecraft. I couldn't discern a consistent cause from WhoCrashed. Any suggestions gratefully accepted. I attach a debug file.

When you did this from post # 11

I did a clean install of win 7 when I brought the pc to my place a few days ago to clear the decks as it were.
did you install all the Windows Updates?

Welcome back Jim. Hopefully we can help you straighten This computer out. But first, I'd like you to answer some of the questions above. However first and foremost we need system specs.
Please fill out your System Specs

   Information
Your System Specs will help us to help you, and doing it in this manner will make them available to all helpers in every post and keep us from hunting for them. We ask that you fill them out in as much detail as possible including Desktop or Laptop, Model number if it is an OEM computer and all components with the Manufacturer and Model number if possible.

If you will go to your last post and click the 'System Specs' in the bottom left of the post, you will find a link to update your system specs. Please fill those out in as much detail as possible. If you would like to know what we would like, you can click 'My System Specs' at the bottom left of this post to see mine. If you do not know what your components are, this will help you accomplish this task. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

If you can run it and boot into windows please run SFC /scannow.

And also run http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-support/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html All of this info, plus the answers to a lot of questions will enable us to get a better understanding what is going on.

I made the mistake of previewing my post and it's gone, all of it. I assume my uploads are cactus too. In short, scannow failed; no graphics adapter fitted; no pattern to crashes; windows 7 from legit source. Speccy and CBS.log attached. I propose to run 16 passes of memtest86+ and then report. I will change the system specs forthwith.
