Norton Internet Security 2010

Windows tells me that I have no security software installed, but I have NIS 2010 installed and running ok... How do I make Windows 7 recognise NIS?

This is a bug in the system. You are probably protected even though Windows gives conflicting information.

As a side note, the best protection for windows is Micfosoftst Security Essentials. Its free, works great with windows and it will not cause operating problems like some other AntiVirus Software.

This is a Windows bug as richc46 pointed out. If for any reason Norton can't function properly, it will display a red circle with a white 'x' in the system tray as opposed to the usual green circle with a white tick.

If you would prefer to have Windows recognise Norton, a uninstall and reinstall will often do it. (Usually takes 2 minutes minus reboots.)

There is no 'best' anti-virus as richc46 proclaims. Norton provides excellent protection (none are perfect) and I suggest changing only if Norton starts giving you grief or you don't get Norton for free (from your ISP, for example) and would rather not having to pay subscriptions to Norton.

He might be referring to the System Health Report. It's just a bug anyway.

The only thing that I have been noticing with Norton lately is when I go into IE and do a search for something on Google, the little checkmarks don't always show up by each search results. They used to. Other times they will and other times they won't. Who knows....

That tends to happen when Google changes its code. Sometimes adding Google to IEs Compatibilty View (under Tools) will fix it (as a temporary solution).

I went into the Tools menu and told it to run all websites in compatibility view and Norton's check marks aren't appearing at all now.

I would agree with others that uninstalling/reinstalling NIS is the first thing to try. In any case I would look directly at NIS to determine it's status - if it says it's OK I would believe it.

As an aside I've been using NIS 2009/2010 on three machines without problems. All the problems that were common in older versions have been fixed in my experience. If cost is an issue note that NIS is often heavily discounted via rebates (I know they're a pain). I only install free AV for customers who won't pay for it. Free AV is getting better, but it isn't as comprehensive as a good suite and the average user cannot handle multiple security apps IMHO.

NIS hasn't been much of a pain or hassle for me. So far, it has lived up to everything that it promises.
