Solved Not a bsod (error 1316 and corrupted msi)

at first i was getting a error #1316 when trying to install any programs on my pc. i did some research and the consensus was that my msi registry key was corrupted. i did a system restore to an earlier point and now my pc is basickly dead. i have to use ctrl shift esc to bring up the task manager and start processes manually which is how i got firefox open to acess my browser. when i try to start explorer.exe it closes automatically so i cant browse to any files to do a backup before i do a fresh install.

i would like to do a backup of my downloads folder if i must do a fresh install on this machine. i had this issue once before and i ended up doing a fresh install than also :/ so my question is is there any way to repair this issue, i only have access to things i can do via the task manager or command prompt. if i have to do a fresh install how can i backup my downloads library to externall hdd before doing it.

UPDATE: ran sfc and now i have explorer back but still getting error 1316

i tried it and they didnt work, my next step is repair install although im worried beacuse the sticker on the bottom of my pc has worn off and i had issues with repair install previously. i used jellybean key finder to find the cd key and wrote it down; last time i did a repair install the key was not accepted but i didnt use jellybean until after the repair install. is there a way i can make sure this key will work when i do the repair install. i asked once before and someone mentioned something about microsoft being able to mail me a replacement sticker if i had the serial number for the pc beacuse it was a preinstalled os. anyway im currently backing up my hard drive just in case this doesnt go according to plan.

also thank you to mods for not moving this, i know its not supposed to be in this section but the bsod team seems to be more capable at diagnosing error codes and such. in the mean time ill try to contribute my knowledge to the community. its pretty nice here

Ignore errors produced when clicking on theCopy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup filesfor some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to yourresponse.



Please also statethe Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one)on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOTquote the Key on the sticker!

i dont have a sticker on my case anymore its worn off, i used jellybean to find my key but im not sure if it will work since its a preinstalled batch os from the manufacturer. i havent done a repair install yet beacuse im afraid i wont be able to validate it.

You're right - the installed Key is the manufacturer's OEM_SLP Key, and will only activate when used with the manufacturer's recovery media.

You should contact Toshiba and order a set of Recovery disks for your machine, and then do a clean install with those.

Your only other option would be to purchase a full license for Windows, and use the new media and Key for the repair install.
