Notification Area Icons disappearing...

I'm not sure where to post this. But I'm having trouble with the notification icon area. Every time I restart, the icons reset to default so all the programs I set to show are hidden again.

Is there any hotfix for this problem that I'm missing?

same thing was happening to me but it seems to remember after a while, try logging out then logging back in again.

Hello Katrascythe, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have alread set them to all Always Show, then you might try this to see if it may help. It is the same in Windows 7.

Seems like this post was a long time ago, but I have exactly this problem, and there is almost no information on it anywhere. If I set an icon to show...then reboot or logoff...it goes right back to it's default state.

If I set them to Always Show (using the checkbox in the customize dialog)...well..then they all always show. Unfortunately I really only want to set 2 or 3 to show.

Can't find much information...but any hints as to what could cause it, or where that info may be stored would be appreciated.

This is caused by access rights restrictions.
Windows 7 tries to figure out which user has configured this setting to store it correctly.

In most cases this happens if you have a personal firewall installed.
Try to deactivate you firewall. Does it work then?

If not, check in TaskManager which account the tray-icon process is running on.

Hey thanks for the reply.

You know I was sorta thinking along the same lines. It certainly acts like a permissions issue due to the fact that the settings just don't stick.

I only have the default windows Firewall in place, but I will try disabling it then seeing if that helps.

But I also like where you are going with checking the task manager. What account should be running that? Admin? I guess my user would be correct? I will check this out too. But out of curiosity why would that have gotten changed or set wrong? It's almost a new installation. Well...I guess I should check it first. I will check tonight.

Yes.

That's the point where the firewalls come into action. Some firewalls are restricting access to file-information or process-information like which user it is running on. Windows is then not able to figure out who wants to store the settings. Even if the try icon runs under correct user. Did it ever worked before?

Hmm.. that's strange. Any Anti-Virus software installed?

I think it's maybe a different problem if it happens to all icons. Are there any icon settings kept?

Thanks again for the response. Oddly I don't seem to have a "tray-icon" process in my task manager. And I looked to see if it might be called something else and I can't find anything related to it. So, is it called something specific?

As an FYI I have no Antivirus (well...ive shut it off for this, I run AVG) and I have tried with the windows firewall on and off....always the same.

All icons are doing it.

There is only one thing even remotely interesting i've done with this computer is renamed it. When I started it on it's initial setup I gave it one name, and later changed the name. But not the username or anything else. So odd.

Hello Joshua,

As a test, create a new administrator account to see if they work and display properly in it. If it does, then you can copy the files from your old user account's user folders to the new account's to use instead. After everything checks out ok, you can then delete the old account from within the new one.

You could try CCleaner setting it to clear out the Tray Notifications Cache. May not work, but it shouldn't hurt anything to try it.

with "tray-icon process" I meant the process in which the tray icon is handled.
e.g. miranda32.exe for the miranda tray icon (32bit version)

I agree in Brinks idea. Try with an other (new!) user account.
