Notification Area Icons - How to Delete?

Using this control panel applet, I can configure how these icons behave. But ... I can't actually delete the icon entries in this applet for apps I've uninstalled, etc. It's worse with some apps, for example: SpeedFan. This is a portable app, and I have it start with Windows. There are now *three* icon entries for it showing in this applet. I installed and later uninstalled Skype, yet it still persists in the Notification Area Icons app, with two instances, no less. (I used Revo Uninstaller to remove the app and registry entries, and I then cleaned the registry with Reg Organizer 5.0.)

In addition, I can see no rhyme or reason as to how the icons are listed in this applet. Every time I want to make a change to a program's icon, I must scroll through the entire list and find every instance. Why no way to sort, delete, etc.?

Or is there something I'm missing?

TIA!

If u right-click the Taskbar, Properties, take a look at the options in Notification Area (Customize).

Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing. I have multiple instances for some programs, some of which are no longer on my system. There's no way to sort the list, etc. I even have instances for progs that didn't even require installing and are no longer on my system. Perhaps I wasn't clear. I understand how to change how notification area icons behave. But there seems to be no way to clean up this list after programs are uninstalled, never installed, etc. For installed programs, it seems to me the icon instances should be uninstalled along with their programs. For other apps, etc., there should be someway to manipulate this list manually.

Is this clearer now?

TIA.

^Ah, I see, could u perhaps try Revo Uninstaller to remove any program remnants - worth a try?

In response to manhunter2826:

I don't mean to be rude, but did you actually read my msg? I said in my first post I used Revo Uninstaller. It seems to me there should be some means in the Notification Area Icons control panel applet to modify or delete its entries. Surely someone has written a tweaker to do what MS forgot? But I'm just an old curmudgeony Win2K MCSE....

Look at my post above.

Or use CCleaner and tick Tray Notification Cache, under Advanced.

Thx. I should have provided context for my message above, in which I responded to manhunter2826. Sorry....

And thanks for your help. I'm already using CCleaner, so I turned on cleaning for the Tray Notification Cache. Unfortunately it didn't get rid of Skype (uninstalled) or the duplicate Speedfan entries. I'll try your tutorial next. Perhaps once I get it cleaned properly, CCleaner will keep it that way. ;)

Airbot, thanks for the pointer to the tutorial on resetting tray notification icons. The registry edit got rid of Skype, which I'd uninstalled. It didn't get rid of multiple instances of Speedfan, but I can live with that. :D
