Hi Guys,

Just after a bit of help, up until yesterday I have been able to install new programs and run as administrator as necessary.

Yesterday I installed an update of a game "Cricket Coach 2012" which required me to launch the program as admin, on doing this the screen greyed out and asked me if I was sure, as normal, clicked yes and the timer started ticking next to the cursor. Nothing then happened so ctrl-alt-del and looked at program running list to which it was there for a few seconds before closing.

Initially I thought the problem was with the game itself, so tried to launch firefox (specifically downloaded to run as administrator to test) and exactly the same thing happened again?

Does anybody know why or how this is happening and more importantly how to fix it? I have already created a secondary admin account to no avail!

Cheers

What do you mean exactly with "the timer started ticking next to the cursor"?

Nope the command prompt loads

In terms of what i meant with the timer next to the cursor, I mean the egg timer that shows that the CPU is loading/working

Now I know what you mean with "timer". Does that circle spin round for ever?

so command prompt starts in C:\windows\system32 succesfully? And the word Administrator is in the title? Is so... it's an elevated command prompt and works as expected

Yes it launches with administrator in the title correctly?

Also the egg timer vanishes after a few seconds, and then the program vanishes from the processes section of the task manager

Thanks for your help so far!

So elevating to admin rights works perfect.

Please be exact as possible.
  1. You see the the elevation to admin rights question with other background somewhat darker.
  2. You press YES to allow it
  3. Now the background is not darker anymore and the "egg timer" appears. Correct?
  4. Egg timer is there for a few seconds. In that time you can select other applications and do anything you want. Correct?
  5. If egg timer is on screen, application is running. After that the process is gone
Please respond

Can you still install windows updates?
Can you still uninstall an update? Just try to uninstall one windows update. If success.. check for updates and install it (the one you uninstalled should be listed)

To confirm the steps are:

1. You see the the elevation to admin rights question with other background somewhat darker.
2. You press YES to allow it
3. Now the background is not darker anymore and the "egg timer" appears.
4. Egg timer is there for a few seconds. I can now run any other application and access internet etc
5. If egg timer is on screen, application is running as shown on task manager, after that the applications dissapears from task manager

I have tried deleting and re-installing, tried other applications that require a first time administrator launch, tried creating a new user with same rights and nothing appears to be working??

You didn't run both fixes? Not necessary if it's working now.

The only thing you did was install the windows updates that were listed ?

Yes, that's all that I did.

The strange thing is that I had most recently updated it on the 16th June 2012, i have used the "run as administrator" option since that date?

Oh well it has solved my query so I'm happy!

Cheers again
