At random intervals (anywhere between 20 minutes to a week), I'll get BSODs. Sometimes it's while playing League of Legends, sometimes while perusing reddit, and sometimes it's while i'm not at the computer at all. I've run checks on my hard drive, updated drivers, taken out my RAM and used both solo, tried scanning with Malwarebytes, but nothing seems to be working. After downloading BlueScreenView, I've noticed that ntoskrnl.exe seems to be taking the blame.
Sometimes a crash won't even involve a BSOD, but will go straight to a black screen that says "PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable". As if my computer no longer recognizes my hard drive. This is my second hdd on this laptop, and this HDD is not quite a year old. Help me Windows Seven Forums, you're my only hope!

Read the require posting material, and I hope I'm posting this correctly.

Edit: Just crashed after posting and forgot to mention that it is a very slow crash. First, Chrome and Windows Explorer stop, and then all the other programs go. I can actually still message people via Steam while it is happening.

Hi Hiray.

Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known BSOD causer. Uninstall Daemon Tools at first. Then download SPTD standalone installer from Disk-Tools.com, and execute the downloaded file as guided below :

  • Double click to open it.
  • Click this button only:
  • 2012-12-13_224441.jpg
  • If it is grayed out, as in the picture, there is no more SPTD in your system, and you just close the window.
Re-seat the SATA and power cable. Make it sure that there is no loose connection and no bent/broken pins. If possible, change the SATA cable, and apply the cable in another unused SATA port on the motherboard.

Seatool for dos: SeaTools | Seagate download

  • Burn it in a blank cd. boot from the CD, click on "Accept", wait for it to finish detecting the drives, then in the upper left corner select "Basic Tests", then select "Long Test" and let it run.
  • ** As you are using AHCI storage controller, Seatools for DOS will not be able to detect a AHCI disc. So Boot into the BIOS, set the storage controller mode to IDE/SATA before running the test.
    • When the test is done, Boot into the BIOS again and set the controller mode back to AHCI, otherwise windows will refuse to boot.
Let us know the results. The test may take long on a 750 GB HDD. If it finds any problem, let at attempt to repair those. If it repairs, run the short test then, to make it sure that the HDD is properly repaired.

Let us know the results.

The HDD passed the long test (3 hours), and I've uninstalled Daemon Tools and SPTD. However, on my laptop, access to the motherboard is troublesome. I do believe there are invisible screws that only exist when I'm trying to open my case. While I have removed my HDD, the SATA (connector between HDD and MOBO correct?) is so far out of reach.

When trying to boot back up I did keep getting the black screen with the Ethernet cable information and the "Media Test Failure, check cable". After a couple of minutes I realize this was because my hard drive was still sitting on my couch. Makes me think there might be a connection failure deeper in the comp than I can reach. I have to work in the morning, but I will begin tearing it apart tomorrow. Until then, I'll leave it on and check BlueScreenView for crashes in the morning.
