Numbers dont add up!

I noticed the amount of space left on this external hardrive and looked at the file size inside and it doesn't add up the recycle bin says its empty so where are the Gb 's
by my rekoning 776gb and 103gb = 879gb leaving a 52gb deficit from 931gb
Anyone?

Ya, run windirstat or treesize, but a couple of suggestions in the dark.

1) Rightclick on the external's recycle Bin icon and check properties. What percentage of space is reserved for recycling? Even though your snip shows zero data in the recycle bin the space is still reserved and unavailable for other uses. Reducing the allocated percentage for that drive may free up some space.

2) Might also be worth looking at System Restore, by default system restore reserves 12% of disk space for Restore points.

I might have a rough Idea why but it depends on some things...

First - The drive you hooked up, did you completely wipe it clean, like fresh format it completely.

Two - I assume the my movies folder is the only folder on there.

Three - Did you also take into consideration that you do lose some of your disk space to Drive formatting. The larger the drive, in this case, you have a terabyte drive, the formatting information will be a percent of your drive, so 52 gig difference is about 1/20th of the disk, that is about 5% of the disk.

Four - Other system regards... For instance, all drives have some hidden system information such as Sysvol which you can't really access and handled by the OS. If that drive is also hooked up to other systems, it will have sysvol information for other machines. If you enabled shadow copy (IE: Previous Versions) on that drive, it will also have a percentage of touched copies in there

I am leaning more towards #3 and #4 more due to the fact that when you were using the size of a folder, it does not count things that are part of the root directory of the drive, which can be hidden system folders that windows generates, which includes System Volume information (You would see it if you use 'Show system hidden files or use a command prompt to that drive and type 'attrib' to show everything.)

Thank you guys for the response. rich i have run windirstat and that shows the missing 50 GB , question now how do i get rid of the contents of the bin, i can't even see it.
show hidden files is already active and the drive has been in use from day one so no formatting previously.

1) Try running the slider to the extreme left in the recycle bin properties so that the space reserved for it becomes zero.

2) You can also try resetting the bin. Unhide hidden files and folders as well as protected operating system files. Then, on the external drive, find and delete $Recycle.Bin. Restart your computer. When the system has restarted, the Recycle Bin will be fully functional once again. You can now go back to Folder Options and return the viewing of hidden files to their default settings.

Ok ran malwarebytes and nothing , i did have a couple of ad-wares in programme files but they have been removed now.
what next?

Bill thanks i cant see a recycle bin on the external the only recycle bin that shows is when i click disc clean-up and then it shows with 0bytes as in previous screenshot,
and when i right click on the bin there is no properties, it has no context menu when i click in the clean up window!!

Did you empty that recycle bin?

You will have to go out to a command line and delete that Recycler directory. I've had to do that on a few servers, where it's files for other people (profiles), but I am unable to see them when logged in with my accounts.

Ah ! no i cant get at it, the bins (unhidden now) say they are empty so im puzzled
