Occasional BSOD, last error was 0x0000007A

I have been experiencing BSOD occasionally since I bought my laptop just over a year ago. I have tried a few things (updates, disk check, memory diagnosis) but the problem persists. There doesn't appear to be any obvious reason why it crashes, sometimes it happens when I'm playing a video or music but other times it will happen when I'm not even using the computer. It happened again last night while I was watching an AVI file from my external hard drive. I know the error codes was 0x0000007A but that's the only info I have (except for the system and dump files as attached).

One problem I have in sorting out the issue is that, as I've said, it only happens occasionally (every 2 weeks -1 month), so it's difficult to check if the problem is fixed, other than waiting to see if it crashes again.

Any help/advice would be gratefully appreciated.

AVG is known to cause BSODs, and it is best to remove the program, with the offical AVG Removal Tool.

Install and perform full scans with:
   Information
Remember to install the free version of Malwarebytes not the free trail; untick the free trial box during installation. MSE is the most lightweight and compatible with the Windows 7 operating system

Start Menu\Programs\DAEMON Tools Lite

Daemon Tools uses a driver called sptd.sys, which is known to cause BSODs with Windows 7. It is recommend you remove this program, and use Windows own in-built features or MagicISO.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I have uninstalled both AVG and Daemon Tools and done a full scan using Security Essentials and also using Malwarebytes. The malware scan found 1 threat which I have removed. I have attached the log detailing the report.

Unfortunately I can't find any minidump file on my computer. It seems Windows was configured to create a kernel memory dump file. I have changed it to small memory dump but I assume I will have to wait for another crash before the file is generated.

Where should I go from here?

I have run the Super Anti-Spyware program and it found 1 file it identified as a Trojan and a load of Cookies. I have removed them all and have included the log file.

The system file checker didn't find any corrupted files.

I have performed the scan for Rootkits and no threats were found. I have attached the log.

I haven't had any more BSOD's since the one that prompted me to post here (last Thursday evening). However, I usually only experience one every 2 weeks - 1 month.

Okay, let's leave this thread open for about a week, and then report back any problems if they occur. Stop 0x7A has be caused by virus infection, and we have seemed to have managed to clean up the infection on your system.

Just as general maintenance and for improved security, make sure you install all the Important and Optional Windows Updates. Many updates are released which improve the security and stability of your system:

  1. Start :orb:
  2. Type: Windows Update
  3. Scan for Updates
  4. Install Important/Optional Updates
