In event viewer under application there is a windows error saying windows update failure, however, under the system log it says windows update sucessfully downloaded and ready to be install.

Does this mean it is successfully or does this mean there is error?

Check the time - and the actual error.
Please open the Event log error (by double-clicking on it), and hit the Copy button - then post the entire error into your reply.
What happens if you do a Check for Updates now?

This error is sometimes caused by corruption in the SoftwareDistribution folder, and Windows can sometimes fix it itself - if the update no longer appears in the listing, then this is what's happened.
If the update is still failing, then it may be fixed by installing from the standalone patch.

Which is the actual update concerned?

No idea which updates it is. The error appears for 2 days after which it didn't appear. Does this mean it has updated and repaired itself successfully?
