Odd Task Scheduler Issues

Opening task scheduler gives me a pop up message:-

The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click refresh.

Click "OK" and the pop up repeats; click "OK" again and a new pop up message:-

Task Scheduler service is not available. Task Scheduler will attempt to reconnect to it.

Click "OK" and the original pop up appears again for the last time. A "Reading Data Failed remains in he Task status window.

All related services and dependencies seem to be running normally. No errors are apparent in the event logs.

Has anyone else come across such an issue?

Cheers from Mike

I think the problem is that CCleaner deleted a file or files that are needed by taskscheduler. Perhaps other cleaners are also deleting files needed by TS.

I have the same issue, and I confess I have used CCleaner. Is there a way to fix this?

Appreciate any help, thanks.

Yes it is running, as well as all dependencies or whatever they are called. Very odd issue.

CCleaner should not break it. I use CCleaner all the time and have a fine install. If you think that was the problem, make sure to backup your registry changes(cleaner) incase something happens.

As for the Task Scheduler problem, i am not really sure at the moment but I can look into it some more later.

Out of desperation, I tried the following process which fixed this issue for me:-

Use regedit and delete all entries under the following key:-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache]

You may wish to backup/export that key before deleting.

Upon reboot, the task scheduler issues were resolved for me.

However, not all related issues were fixed. For instance, disabling or enabling system restore points (right-click "My Computer" - properties) resulted in this popup message:-

"Could not create the scheduled task for the following reason:
Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (0x800700B7)"

Hope this is of some help to resolve the issue - any comments would be most welcome.

Cheers from Mike :)

OK so tried erasing those registry keys and worked fine. Did of course check the Viper page first for services, and they were all running as supposed.

I don´t use system restore so don´t think I will have a problem with that. Well lets see what happens if I try the tab... Well the system protection tab appear to work as it should. All protection is off according to mine and to be honest don´t want to activate it to see if any issues...

Try using the back-up tool with system image instead. I do it every 2nd / 3rd week. Works great, and have used it a few times mostly to try it, an awesome feature! (especially when you have an nVidia MB and GPU)

Thanks!

Another program that is nice to have is called SyncToy version 2. It is more along the lines of files and things since it does not do registry backups.

How on earth did you find that key, and thought about deleting it?

Hi Habu,

I think that solution was proposed by Rick Rogers quite some time ago.

It is on several sites - you can find it by googling.

I tried the reg fix but I keep getting an error: "Unable to delete specified values." I tried fixes for this as well with no success. I have CCleaner installed but i haven't used it yet.

I had the same error on a fresh install. I have installed CCleaner but have never run it. I got desperate and went off half-cocked and started deleting scheduled tasks which were not installed by me (Microsoft folders in the Library). When I got down to Defrag I got the same "{0}" error. I had defragged! By chance the error has now disappeared.

So I think possibly defrag may be involved in creating this error. But I don't know for sure.

I am now regretting having deleted those Microsoft (and Apple and something like WDN at the bottom) tasks as I have no idea how they can be restored.

Win7 task scheduler

Hi,
If your problem relates to:-

the selected task "{0}" no longer exists

Have you set your defrag schedule to MONTHLY if so set it to Daily or Weekly.
This solved the problem for me.

I have placed various messages on different boards but no one
has rereplied. If you would like to see the message go to url below

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...s/01e60fa1-8004-40b4-9cf0-247fb80edb56?page=3

Hope this helps

Regards

Jim.

I ran CCleaner, and I had the error. I keep all of the removed entries every time I run it tho. I just put them back, and the error was gone. It seems CCleaner does have something to do with this. I am going to try the latest version, and see if it continues to break it. BRB...

I believe the part that broke it, was the registry fixer. I did run an older version, and was able to re-register the saved entries to fix the issue. I installed latest version, and ran it, both the registry fixer, and the cleaner part. and all is well. It does pay to keep those registry backups of the removed entries. I hope this helps!
