Ever notice how people will sometimes call you "bro" and "dude" in these forums? LOL...

Someone just made their first post asking for help, I jumped on it and they replied with "will try that dude, thanks." By the time that reply appeared, they'd put an avatar picture of a pretty hot babe up.

I was tempted to ask back, "YW dudette, but how do you know I'm really a dude?" (I am.)



On a related note, I thought for the longest seavixen was female. Must be something about the nice and friendly tone of her--I mean, his posts.

For those of us not from the USA, what exactly is a dude? I'm just wondering if we have a different word for it on this side of the pond.

Not long after I joined this remarkable forum I helped a poster who replied "Thanks Dude" so I replied back "You're welcome (PS I'm a dudette" ) and it sort of stuck

Exactly how it started I'm not sure.
Probably the start of this being used in its present form on a wider scale in the USA.

1969 - In Dennis Hopper's cult film Easy Rider, the protagonist Wyatt (Peter Fonda) is seen describing the word "dude" to George Hanson (Jack Nicholson) as "...a nice guy... a regular sort of person."

Though not a nation wide usage until...this.

1989 - Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure Movie about two burn outs who travel through time in order to complete a history assignment. During their presentation, President Lincoln says, "seven minutes ago... we, your forefathers, were brought forth upon a most excellent adventure conceived by our new friends, Bill... and Ted. These two great gentlemen are dedicated to a proposition which was true in my time, just as it's true today. Be excellent to each other. And... PARTY ON, DUDES!"

1992 - The film Wayne's World is released, containing many uses of the word "dude", such as, when Garth freezes on camera, "ever see that scene in Scanners when that dude's head blew up?"

I always thought that the word 'dude' originally derived from the guys who worked on 'dude ranches' - but that was waaaay before the current pop-culture use of the term.

Being a 'dudette' myself, I always chuckle at the assumption that any helpful answer is almost automatically assumed to be from a male. Times are changing, but still, most folks on these forums are male, it's true.

Surely what matters is the quality of the help, not whether it came from a male or female source.

Oh, and thanks for the explanation of the word "dude", I was beginning to think it was something derogatory, so it's nice to discover it's a complimentary term.
