First of all sory if this annoys some people for posting an off topic question.
I tried to figure it out on my own but could so I came here because I have always had my questions answered by people on this site.

A relative got a new tv. Its just a small 22" samsung ( Samsung LN22D450 22" LCD HDTV LN22D450G1FXZA B&H Photo ).
The sound is as you would expect on a small tv, terrible.

I wondering a cheap way to get better sound. Maybe someone could recommend some speakers that would work with the TV.

I hope everyone had a merry Christmas,
thanks in advance.

Does it have standard audio outputs? If not, you may be stuck. I know that some Samsung TVs do not have any easy way to connect auxiliary speakers or to route sound through a standard home stereo system.

Well, what can you plug into the SPDIF audio out? It appears to be your only choice.

Isn't that used to play sound through a PC? If so, that probably wouldn't help. I've never attempted to use an SPDIF output on a TV. I'd doubt if you can connect an ordinary set of auxiliary speakers to SPDIF, but I could be wrong.

The SPDIF output could be used to connect to a home theater receiver.
Are you positive there are no rca audio outs ?

Its just a 22" inch tv, im not looking to get a full home theater for it. It has a headphone jack, would computer speakers theoretically work?

There could be a low-dollar A/V receiver you could use if it has HDMI output. TV signal>A/V receiver>TV via HDMI. the A/V will have outputs for speakers, two would be enough. There are pre-packaged home theater systems for around $200 USD. I suspect PC speakers won't be much better than the TV's.

2ch - Yes.

I suspect PC speakers won't be much better than the TV's.

Depends on the speaker quality really. Some cheap PC speakers may have a better soundstage/bass than the TV's inbuilt speakers.

Or as you say, they could be much of a muchness.

I was thinking the same thing, I know the cheap speakers probably wouldn't sound much better if at all. But there are some decent computer speakers out. I may just say to get a home theater or a sound bar, but it seems kind of strange to spend 200+ on a sound system for a 22" tv.. but it may have to happen because the sound is terrible.

Thanks a lot for the input everybody.

Recommend some compact pre-amplified Samson monitors as bookshelf sized speakers. I have a pair linked to a Humax FTA tuner, and another pair on my PC. They truly rock.

By the way, the onboard sound on Samsung TV's is superior to those made by LG... ;)
