Office 2013 changed browser icons

I installed Office 2013 and all .html and .htm files show with Office icons for a document rather than Firefox or Internet Explorer icons. Icons for the programs are correct. I don't want to do anything drastic in case it makes the situation worse. Any one have similar experience or suggestions? Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Hello Heritage, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check to make sure that you have either Internet Explorer or Firefox set as your default program with all of it's associations. This will set .html and .htm to be opened by the one you set again.

If they files do open with IE or Firefox as set, then it may be a corrupted icon cache. Rebuilding the icon cache will be able to sort that for you if that's the case.

Thanks. Icon Rebuild has been recommended to many others before with icon problems. I am reluctant to use a program I am not familiar with but tried it anyway. Didn't work. Tried most of the suggestions to others before posting as well; e.g. check file associations which are OK. I was just struck by the fact that I noticed the problem soon after installing Office 2013. I held off upgrading, even though I get most stuff free from work (legally), just because MS seems to have some little nasty surprise at every turn. Happened again. Anyone else have similar problem with Office 2013? (At least it solved a much nastier problem with Excel 2010 which is widely reported on the web.)

In that case, you might see if downloading and merging the .reg files for the listed .htm and .html options in the tutorial below may help. They will restore the default associations and registry entries for these file types.
