I was travelling in the north of Chile in 2007, and experienced a 6.8 magnitude earthquake which is quite un-nerving. The next day I was in the capital, Santiago, and we had a smaller 4.8 : I was staying on the 20th floor of the hotel, and man....its freakish feeling that amount of sideways movement in a structure that high up

Since I imagine that they don't have earthquake building codes, that would be particularly unnerving. If I lived in an earthquake prone area, I would want to live on the ground floor. Of course, I might feel differently, after the upper floors crashed on me.

Chile actually has very good building codes; implemented in the wake of the 1960 magnitude 9.5 earthquake. Unfortunately, its not always rigourously adhered to by property developers.

Maybe Im a baby, but that would have scared me to death lol

Once everything settled down, I found I had this sudden compulsion to drink quite a lot of beer......strange that

It's now been 2 weeks since the first tremor, and they still rattle on. I would have thought by this time that they would have gone silent.

I would think it should have settled by now as well.

I still think it's better to continue to have small aftershocks, then have it all build up and let loose all at once

I find no fault in that logic, but they can't go on forever...can they? (Considering this isn't California)

I think after a moderate quake, they can go on for a year or so. After a major quake, I believe it can be decades. Obviously it will differ depending on what type of fault it is, and geology, etc. A Guy

Ahhh...I see someone has developed a good grasp of seismics . Indeed it much better to have smaller ones, than have the energy released in one go - a principle exploited succesfully in underground mining support.

It has now been 4 weeks, and there are still a few small quakes in this area. While those still happening are relatively quite small, I have been wondering how big a quake would have to be to be felt living atop the epicenter of the tremors? Only 2 of the early quakes were felt where I live, but since I'm as far away as I am, I'm sure that the people living in that area felt a lot more of them. I bet it is unsettling to feel the ground shake every day for a month.
