Do CPU fans or fan plates come in different sizes? My old CPU fan back plates and screws on the fan itself is just slightly too small for my new mother board. Any ideas?

Hi Eblim.

Yes they do come in different sizes which vary by motherboard and, of course CPU. You can sell the one you have and get a CPU can that fits your motherboard. There are sites you can check for more information on this. You could shop for one on Newegg and whichever one you choose, select the details tab and hover to the compatibility category of it; that will show you exactly which motherboard types and CPUs are able to work with the fan.

Yes, you do need to order what matches your CPU & motherboard socket type to get a correct fit. ;)

Fan mountings generally match socket names. The one you have is a socket 775 fan, the new mobo and CPU are socket 1155.

Thank you so much! You know your stuff. I did find it on my motherboard's website under detailed specifications for the "LGA 1155" socket; MSI Global ? Motherboard - H77MA-G43. After you told me of course, to confirm it for myself.

Much appreciated.

That's very similar to the one I'm getting. Smaller 92mm dual fans, still affective, but I wanted the larger 120mm size because they don't come with fan funnels, which I had on my stock Foxconn CPU fan.

I purchased a new motherboard, hopefully the BIOS in this will allow me to change my RPM of my case fan. I unplugged my case fan and had the side hull of my case open. The fan was going around 2,100-2,400 rpm and it was extremely loud. I didn't want that, so having that open was my solution to that problem.

afaik, only 4-pin fans on 4-pin fan headers allow this kind of adjustment. 99% of the times only the CPU fan has 4 pins.

For 3 and 2-pin fans you need to get a fan resistor (cheap, available in 2-3 fixed voltages thus you have 2-3 fan speeds depending on what of the bunch you decide to mount, the less the voltage, the lower the RPM, the fan usually can't operate at all below 5 volts) or a fan controller (more expensive but you can fine-tune it and it's the best choice if you have a ton of fans in your case).
Either can be made from scratch if you have some soldering skills and google a DIY guide on the Internetz.

And/or a quieter fan, of course.
