I have an ancient HP laptop that I don't use much. It's slow and I just don't need it all the time as I use my Dell 2 year old laptop. I have the Dell laptop(win10) and a Dell desktop(win7). If I do some refurbing on the old HP and get it running a bit better, when I access the net, will it affect the the other two pcs?. Since win7 is no longer supported by msn, and now I will have two pcs with win7 running -- I just thought I would use it for backup if any problem with the other two. I have not had any issues with the desktop running 7 with my win10 Dell on the network. Make sense? Thanks.

The old laptop shouldn't affect anything if you just use it to browse the Internet.

BTW, I keep an old HP laptop around for my son to use when he comes around. It's probably older than yours. When I bought it in 2006 it had 1GB RAM and Windows XP. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB and installed Windows 7 on it. It is also slow but good enough to browse the Internet and play videos on YouTube.

Good luck with your old laptop. It probably has a lot of life left in it if you accept its limitations.

I have a correction to make. I actually bought the old laptop in October 2004.

I have two laptops and three desktops
  • Laptop #1: Purchased in 2004. Came with Windows XP Home. Upgraded it to Windows 7 Home.
  • Laptop #2: Purchased in 2018. Came with Windows 10 Home.
  • Desktop #1: Built in 2009. Installed Windows 7 Home on it. Free upgrade to Windows 10 Home.
  • Desktop #2: Built in 2011. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate on it. Free upgrade to Windows 10 Professional.
  • Desktop #3: Built in 2017. Installed Windows 10 Professional on it.
All five computers are connected to my home network. I can share files over the network between them.

If you need any help with networking your computers just let me know.

I guess the networking of all of the pc's is what had me worried. That the unsupported 7 OS would affect the others. But you have shown me that that isn't a problem. Thanks so much again. I will certainly contact you if I need help. I was actually thinking of trying a Linux OS on it but haven't gotten to that. I have a bookmark for one which I'll have to find - it sounded pretty straightforward.
