Old MS security(?) update

I am running WIN 7 Pro and a VMXP sp3. I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer. Sometime ago some MS updates were downloaded and installed onto the WIN 7 Pro OS. XP no longer has updates. Since then my printer will NOT scan. On the VMPX the scan operation continues to work just fine. I also cannot screen print from IE 11 any more on the Win 7 Pro. I can screen print from IE11 on the VMXP.
I am thinking that some update caused the problem. HP wants more $ than a new printer to try to solve the problem. Maybe there is a switch in the WIN 7 Pro OS that is interfering with the scan.

Any leads would be appreciated.

Find out where all printer software is installed.
Delete all the software then clean the register and the folders where all printer software were installed.
Reinstall the software.
