Old Win 98 programs never die...

I have a bizarre problem (of my own making)... for years I have been hooked on an old Win 95/98 program called CARDFILE.EXE. I've been dragging it around from computer to computer including a networked Win 7 32 bit operating system computer and it still works. I just drag the CARDFILE pieces into a user file and away it goes. I even have an icon on the desktop and the old Win Help files work! It is so simple and useful, I have avoided updating to newer cardfile programs that do too much and take half a screen. All I want is a simple "rolodex" that I can pop up, thumb through to what I want to see in the corner of screen and then pop it off.

Until now, that is... a new computer is a Win 7 64 bit machine that won't run the CARDFILE! I've never had to restore to compatibility modes on the CARDFILE.EXE ever, but I have even tried that but to no avail on the 64 bit Win 7 machine.

CARDFILE.EXE, at last, won't work. The problem is that in the past, I never had to "install" the cardfile program. True, the 64 bit Win 7 has a 32 bit Program File (x86) mode, but my old pal can't install itself :(. Is there a simple way to force compatibly without a full blown install routine? Or do I, at last, start typing hundreds of new Outlook cards? Ugggg

after a bit of googling, it seems that our old friend cardfile (i remember it from my windows 3.1 days) no longer works with x64.

you will probably have to look at alternative software.

apparently Jot+Notes will import old cardfile files (or cards)...and a lot of people seem to like azzcardfile.

unfortuately neither of these are freeware, but modestly priced shareware. try them and see.

good luck.

Yep, the sample was the cardfile.exe I've been using... too bad! It wasn't the cost, just the simplicity that I liked. If it ain't broke, don't fix it... hummm maybe the wife can use the new comuter and I could use the old...

If you have Win98 disk you can get it to work in VirtualBox. It just takes a bit of doing. Or you might look into DosBox and running Win98 out of that, and using it to run cardfile or running cardfile directly from DosBox. I never got around to messing with DosBox but from what I see on the web it's the way to go to get 16 bit stuff to run.

I did get my old Win98 to run out of VirtualBox, but then I realized the entire file system was going to be smaller than one of my downloads!! I took it off once the thrill was gone. :)

Ask around in the virtualization forum.
