Only 3 GB ram usable out of 4 GB - 64 bit windows 7 pro.

Hello everyone ,

I just performed a clean format & installed windows 7 pro. However only 3gb is usable out of the installed 4 GB.
Ive also checked ms-config and it shopws1 GB of memory as 'reserved'. My boot-up shows my 2 sticks of 2 GB ram each working at dual-channel interleaved.

Following is my configuration.

Intel Core2 Duo 2.93 GHz
4 GB ram.
250 GB hard drive
Gigabyte GA-945 GCM S2L
ATI Radeon HD 4650 1 GB graphics memory.


Kindly let me know how do i use all of my 4 GB of ram.

Part of your memory usage is "Hardware Reserved."

In search box type Resource Monitor>click on Resource Monitor in the list>Click on Memory Tab>near bottom left side of window, what is the "Hardware Reserved" amount?

@AmericanPharoah ,. It shows 1 GB. I presume the graphics card is sharing it. How do I uncheck this.

The processor chipset driver must require it is all I can guess ?

Go to search type in MSCONFIG, from the popup menu, select it by pressing Enter. Chick on the Boot Tab, then Advanced options. See if "Maximum Memory" has a check mark in the box above it. If not, check it. If it does have a check mark, uncheck it. Click OK, Click Apply and OK, Click restart. Go back to Resource Monitor, Memory Tab, and check the amount of Hardware Reserved amount once again. Did it change, if so, what's the new amount. In MSCONFIG what did you do there?

In addition: To Graphics Card, some Memory is reserved for BIOS and some drivers for other peripherals.

@ American-Pharaoh .. Yes I did exactly as you mentioned. The hardware reserved still shows 1024 MB.
