So, I'm told firefox used to work but now I can't get any website from firefox, googleupdater can't reach the network to install chrome, sansaupdater can't get to the network to install anything. I've checked the firewall for all possible connections, even turning it off.... no help. I can ping from the cmd prompt. I have run all of these programs in compatiblility mode(s) and as administrator. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.....

thanks!

Hi JerluvHeatha,

Have you tried running any antivirus scans or anti-malware scans? It's a definite possibility that a malware attack has caused this. If not, give MBAM a go (see below for instructions).

I'd like to ask you to download and install an application known as Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, as it will be a necessary tool for cleaning your system.

Please execute the following instructions:

  • Double-click the 'mbam-setup.exe' file to install this application.
  • Ensure a check mark is placed in the radio box next to 'Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware' and please also make sure that there is a check mark in the radio box next to 'Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware'
  • Click 'Finish'
    • Note: If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please do not interrupt this process.
  • Once the program has loaded, please ensure a check mark is placed in the radio box next to 'Perform Full Scan' (not Perform Quick Scan) and proceed by clicking on 'Scan'.
    • Note: The scan may take some time, so please be patient and wait for it to finish. Please stop all current downloads while your scan is in progress, as this may corrupt the results.
  • When the scan is complete, click 'OK' and then click 'Show Results' to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and proceed by clicking 'Remove Selected'
  • Once disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your machine. If you are asked to restart, please do so.
    • Note: The log is automatically saved by Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and can be viewed by clicking on the 'Logs' tab in the main interface.
Thanks,
Harvey Meale

so, I'm running un-updated to see what happens, I'll let you know how it goes.

And nope, there's no proxy just a wifi connection to a cable modem router in standard config.

yeah sounds like something is blocking, try msconfig click startup uncheck everything except windows components and reboot. Then try to run Malwarebytes again. Most likely something is starting at startup that is causing this. Doing this should disable whatever it is.

Either you have a virus or you have shot yourself in the foot.

Two things to try:
1. rename mbam_setup.exe to xyz.exe and run it. then name is not important what is important that you rename.
2. pick a restore point prior to your problem appearing.

Thanks for all the suggestions, still no luck though. I've renamed the mbam executable, it runs but still won't update, the un-updated scan finishes without finding any threats. I've dissabled a few things in msconfig, not much as most of what is checked is from ms, but I stopped the firewall, biometrics, wildtangent and parental controls services. There is no proxy, and all of my system restore points are new enough that I think the problem was already there, ie: 3 weeks. Is there a way to get farther back in restore history? I think when I have time I'll do the system restore but for now, does anyone have any other suggestions? Also, msEssentials finds no threats......

Jerluvheatha,

Very understandably there are misconceptions regarding System Restore, System Backup, System Repair. The naming by MS is unfortunate.

I'll include some links to tutorials and also suggest:

Thanks for your suggestions, I'll be back at that system soon, I don't get lots of time on it. I'll let you know how it goes, I'm thinking I may need to do a factory reset.

You can always try running the command netsh winsock reset from an administrative/elevated cmd prompt to reset the sockets layer to the out-of-box defaults. It'll break any apps with an LSP installed on the winsock stack, but the only thing in common that network apps would have would be winhttp, wininet, and winsock. IE uses wininet, Firefox is a sockets app, and MWB is a winhttp app - given a wininet app works but neither the winsock or winhttp one does not, it sounds like something's sitting at the winsock layer and causing you trouble (wininet and winhttp use winsock, but applications using wininet or winhttp don't access winsock directly - it's complicated, I'm not going to get too deep into that here ;)). I'd reset winsock before doing anything drastic to see if there is anything on the network stack itself that would cause it.

Hi all, I've been able to work on this machine again and recently it evolved to where IE couldn't access the network either. I can still ping from cmd.exe but nothing else can get to the outside. Since there are other systems in the house I can verify that the router is routing traffic, meaning we can get to the 'net. So.....

First I created a couple of other users to see if it was a user setting... no luck.

Then starting in safe mode on the affected (infected?) computer I found that Firefox works, IE works and MalwareBytes is able to update, so I'm running it again.....

I've done backups so I may just do a factory reset soon, although this is "interesting".

Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone?

Oh, I think I'll run rootkit revealer if MWbytes doesn't find anything.
