No connection to the internet using the antennas but can with a dongle

I have an old Compaq computer running windows 7. The HD was changed and a new copy of Windows 7 was installed. Before the HD was changed I was able to connect to my router without a dongle but could not after. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Your specs mention the OS as Windows 10 x64 ? Is it a dual boot ? Are you able to connect to the router ( without the dongle ) from within the Windows 10 Boot ?

2. How it shows in the Device Manager ? Is there anythng showing as unknown device with yellow exclamation mark ? Check the tutorial there : Device Manager - Finding Unknown Devices

3. The easiest way to check the hardware will be to try it along another OS. For that you can try Linux from USB / DVD or Mini Operating System / PE , Preferably a Win 10 PE, from USB / DVD. If it works there, everything is good with the hardware.

hit the "bars" to see if your network is shown if so then you need to enter the SSID password

I just now looked at my post and did not see windows 10 mentioned anywhere. The computer in question is a Compaq Presario CQ62 running windows 7.

When the Dongle is in the usb port I see a full set of bars but without the dongle there are no bars and where they should be is an X.

I used this computer as my personal machine in an office I had. The problem did not occur until I had to replace the HD and re-installed windows 7 about 10 years after I retired. The HD had failed so I was unable to make a disc image and instead bought and downloaded a copy of windows 7.

As it was used in your office i suspect it was using the LAN (ethernet). might just be that the installed wifi driver is switched off
The Presario does supply an always appreciated Wi-Fi on/off button (mapped to the F12 key).

that product has been retired by HP so no official driver site - we will need the details of the wifi card.

hmm.
I recollect I had a Compaq Presario but it had a dedicated button for Wifi but I am unable to recollect how it showed on screen when it is switched off!
