Opening to view folder slow

Ok some help please. If i open in explorer my photo folder, i have about 2000 jpgs, it takes around 1-2 minutes to sort if i want it from date modified order. I have 4GB memory, so I dont think its that. Can i speed it up. I disabled winrar shell integration, still slow. Thanks anyone.

Is the folder and files indexed? I have a large folder with 18 subs and 912 images that sort in about 7 seconds. Mine is not indexed and the images do not have tags. Viewing large icons. MSSE exclude JPG.

Just some variables off the top of my head I can think of for comparison. What happens if you display list or details? Does that improve the speed? Also, what is your video card?

Yes folder is indexed plus I have Nvidia 9800 GT 512
Could it be the index?

Possibly. If that dosent fix the problem you can always add the index attribute back the folder (apply to all files/folders). I dont think its your video card.

Im guessing sorting by name isnt an issue. Only when you change the default sorting?

Ok i took index off, i noticed it 11500 files, jpgs. If i sort it by date modified, it takes around 1-2 minutes, then it sorts, I guess because of that many files that it should be correct?

In my subfolders I have toal 19,812 files. But in the root folder only 912. If you were to break your collection down into subfolders I think you would get better performance. I know if I had all my images in a single folder, it might take some time to sort them.

While its sorting its also creating thumbnails (or reading existing ones from the DB).

In short, 2k files shouldnt take 2 minutes. But 11k+ may be another story. Since there wasnt a realized performance gain from not indexing, go ahead and put the attribute back on.

I've also noticed though in large folders of images if you use the grouping option that adds more time to the sorting/rendering.

Thanks for the help. Yeah i can't place them in sub folders. Good idea though. I guess i need to live with it. I put back the indexing sine i like it.

But i have a question, is there a way to set a folder to sort for example last modified and it stays that way. Mine does not.

Have a look at this thread at post #2. There is a link there to make folders remember thier last view. It may help your remembering sort order.

If that dosent work I know of one work around. Open the folder and in the search box enter

Then sort, group and get the displayed results the way you like 'em. Then on the toolbar click on Save search. Not the best way to go, but at least when you open the saved search it will haev your view settings.
