Operating System Drive Getting Full, How to clean and move?

Hey there,

I'm new to the forum and looking for some advice. I've got an HP envy laptop and I am having some memory issues. I don't have very much installed on this computer, yet I only have close to 8GB left of room on a 75GB drive. I do have a second hard drive on the laptop that is 700GB. I have tried a bunch of things to clean up the C drive of all the memory, including clearing windows search index. However, I can't seem to increase the room on it.

What would I have to do to switch the C drive to the D drive for my operating system? My D drive currently only has 2GB of data used. I've attached a photo of what I'm dealing with. I tried to adjust partitions, but as you can see, they are pretty much full.

I also just can't figure out where all of this data is being used. I don't have much software at all on this laptop and I don't have any games on it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Disk 1 is 80 GB total capacity. I had an 80 GB drive for a long time with Win 7 and never used more than about 35 GB, which included over 50 applications. No data.

Describe in detail the "bunch of things" you've done.

Download Tree Size Free to find out where the space is used.

TreeSize Free - Quickly Scan Directory Sizes and Find Space Hogs

How much space have you devoted to System Restore?

How much space have you devoted to the page file?

Do you use hibernation?

How much RAM is installed?

If you have to, you can move to the other drive through either cloning or imaging--but you may not have to---depending on forthcoming details.

What do I open this tree size with? What program? I downloaded it and it was asking me what to open it with.

Here's what I found with tree size. I see the folder x86, but unsure of what it is.

What are the answers to the 4 questions in my first post?

Are you unable to comply with the request in red in that post?

You bet. Sorry.
I went in and cleared all of my cache.
Cleared temp data.
Cleared search data.
Ensured I didn't have duplicate data between C and D drives.
Did a disk cleanup of the C drive.
Defragged the drive.

My system restore is set to 0 bytes.
Page file is 6091MB
The hibernation is turned on, but I rarely use it.
6GB of RAM

Hopefully that helps you help me...lol. I love this tree size though, as it is already helping me a bit, but any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Type the command "powercfg -h -off" at a command prompt to turn hibernation off. That should save a few GB. No need for it if you don't use it.

Did you confirm that you in fact have no System Restore points? They should appear in Tree Size as very long string of apparently random characters.

Page file: Windows default is to set it based on installed RAM, but it's very unlikely you need that much. I set mine to 1 GB minimum and 2 GB maximum.

Did you specifically tell Disk Cleanup to clean up system files when you ran it? That's an option that should pop up.

For your comparison, here are my folder sizes on a Win 7 system with 55 or 60 applications installed:

C grand total 41.2 GB

C Windows 26.4

C program files 1.8

C program files x86 3.4

C users 1.7 (I keep NO personal data on C).

How big is your C:\users\your user name\AppData?? This can grow. Mine is 1.6

Reboot after you change settings and then re-check and re-run Tree Size.

Well thanks for the help! My total space used is now 54GB, which gives me 20GB of free space. Better than the 1.7GB I started with. I'm not going to play with anything else, as it already seems a bit faster..lol. My C Users file is 2.6GB.
Rebooted and had a look at the tree size. Things look way better, but there's a lot of files in there that I have no idea what they are for.

Disable hibernation if you don`t use it.

Lower the page file to 2 GB

There could also be Windows Update backups.

Further to Addram's last comment,
have you ever run the MS disc cleaner option, it clears a lot of backup files.
