Outlook 2010 - editing to address

So I typed an address in my To: and tabbed down to type my message. The address is validated and underlined as I'm typing my email, but I noticed I typo'd the address. Now I go back up to the address in the To: field to fix it (delete 1 character) and I can't seem to edit it? If I right click I can bring up an Outlook contact card, where it can't be edited. Or I can bring it up in a Outlook contacts page but it can't be edited there either - and it wants me to save as an outlook contact there which I don't want to do for this one off address.

In OL 2007 you just dbl clicked on the underlined address in the To: and it popped up with a dialog box that allowed you to change the address and the display name.

Is there something I can do to get that behavior back?

"Highlight" the entire typo'd address in the To: typing field
Right Click and review available options to edit

That doesn't solve it. In OL 2007 your could right click and have an option to click on properties which would get you the dialog. Not in 2010. Your options are Cut, Copy, Clear, Add to OL Contacts, Look Up OL Contacts and Contact card (which just brings it up in a dialog box you can't edit in). I don't want to put the address in my contacts.

OK,
I was thinking that you wanted to edit the "To:" because of a typo!
When I do that I just select "clear" and retype (correctly) the one off email address.
Never did 2007 went from 2003 straight t0 2010

No, sorry not autocomplete. And yes I do want to just correct the address I typed in. And yes, I can retype the whole address again, but what a pain. Shouldn't have to do that to change one letter - never used to have to. Ok, I'm whining, I don't typo that often, but I don't like new versions to make things more difficult. It would be even better if you could do the correction right from the To: line but I believe it was OL2007 that started with the properties dialog box that popped open where you could edit the address and display name. Now I don't even get that.

Thanks for the comments so far...

OK, on my installation when I have a typo I can left click into the typed address, just like in Microsoft word and delete, retype as many characters as I want, etc. I don't necessarily have to retype the entire email address. I just tried this out on my outlook just to make sure. Before I made this post

You can do that while you're actually typing but not after you've gone down to the message and it has underlined (checked) the To: address. Also can't edit it if you are resending the email. Try it the way I described in the first post and let me know if it works for you? I just get the mini-contact display box.

Yep, see what you mean no edit possible after you get the underline on the address box.
Will put this up on Technet forum and see if MS guys respond.

I have to agree. This is another annoying step backward from Microsoft.

Someone decided to make typing a simple email address so complicated that they stop you from being able to edit it if you make a typo.

Has anyone found a solution to this annoying negative feature in Outlook 2010?

Help on Attaching Contact to Appointment- 2010

I saw and ready your post. It was the closest to my question.

Any thought on how, in Outlook 2010, to attaching a Contact to an Appointment??? We used to be able to do that in 2003.

Help Help? (Not real techie on this end.) Thanks. mlw

Outlook 2010 removed ability to edit e-mail addresses

I also find this frustrating that I can't edit an e-mail address typed in any of the address fields (To:, Cc:, or Bcc:).

Not sure if you noticed, but it's worse than that. You can't even edit the e-mail address in a contact! I assume both use the same code object/method, which does not allow editing.

The only way to make any edit to the e-mail address is to delete and retype the entire address. WHY?!

Definitely a step backwards.

Solved email edit in Contacts

I figured this out. But I want to punch out whoever took away the functional idea of editing a #$&^$^ email address in a program meant for emailing people.
Hover over the email address in their contact card. The smaller new 2010 'contact card' will appear. There is a little symbol in the upper right-ish corner that looks like a list written on piece of paper. When you hover over it it says 'View more options for interacting with this person'. Click on 'Outlook Properties' and the 'Email Properties' box will come up where you can edit the name and email address.
As a super annoying note, if you hover over their email address in an email or a group distribution list, the same little 'contact card' will appear, but when you click on 'Outlook Properties' it just opens the large contact card and you have to do the same steps over again.
And if your contact is part of a group, even when you say 'Update now', the displayed email does not change, although if you double click on it to send an email the updated email is used.
I seem to get 'lost members' a lot and then Outlook 'repairs' them, I am wondering if this is why the lists aren't updating properly. Does anyone know why this happens??

Simpler Solution

For some reason, when I do what is described in this thread, it brings up a full contact screen, where I can again not edit the errant email address character by character.

However, this works for me:

1. Hover over the email address in error. This brings up the contact card. The top line shows the email name. The second line shows the email address entered. If you have only entered an email address, both lines will have the same content.

2. Right click on the email address.

3. Click on Copy (or Copy Name if you right-clicked on the name field).

4. Go back to the Outlook email panel and click on the incorrect email address.

5. Hit Delete or Backspace to delete it.

6. Hit Ctrl-V (or right-click and click Paste) to paste an editable version of the email address.
