Overclocking a server CPU?

I was thinking about doing something a bit different for my next build... overclocking a server CPU. Here is the spec of the CPU I was looking at:

AMD Opteron 6344 @ 2.6 GHz (Turbo up to 3.2 GHz)
Microarchitecture: Piledriver
Cores: 12
Memory channels: 4
Supported memory: DDR3
L2: 12 MB
L3: 16 MB
TDP: 115W
Price: ~$415

Are there motherboards which would allow me to do something like this? Before anyone asks why, I want as many cores as I can afford, with more than dual-channel (so the AMD desktop CPUs wont do, and the Intel 6-core i7s are expensive). This CPU would do that for me.

You would need a G34 socket motherboard, I think. I don't think they make those in desktop models (at least I couldn't find one), so you would need to get a server motherboard.

In my limited experience, I have never run across a server motherboard with options for overclocking. Those servers were all Xeon based, however. Like I said, my experience is limited.

Yeah its a G34. Well, even if I cant OC a 3.2 GHz turbo is enough anyways... especially with that much cache and cores.

Yeah. That does sound pretty powerful.

Y'know, I was thinking... If the clock speed isn't locked by the MB, you might be able to OC it by increasing the FSB. The multi will probably be locked, except for the turbo speed setting, but the FSB may not be. You might get a modest OC that way...

I believe that AMD terms it the HT clock, or the bus clock if you prefer.

Yeah I think HyperTransport is AMD's version of Intel Quick Path Interconnect. Well, on my system there is a separate QPI link speed, and bclk setting. Makes things a bit confusing.

lol, the words overclock and server in the same sentence will make most IT guys cringe. It sounds like a fun project though if you have one sitting around doing nothing anyway.

If you are using a AMD CPU they feed off of FSB they are different in regards to overclocking than intel

AMD chips are able to use a combination of Multi and FSB Intel is just Multi when you use the BLCK on Intel Boards you normally crash AMD allows it and actually performs better
