Hello,

I recently had a issue with my old asrock motherboard and I could not be bother to wait for the rma process to go through which could be anywhere from 1 week to 3 months and I am on a tight budget so I swapped the Asrock FM Board with a old x-gaming board.

This board has the Socket 939 Input so I carn't get any processors more powerful then 2.00Ghz so I am just thinking about overclocking the cpu so it can play modern games

Please look at the SPECS BELOW before answering so I don't destroy this machine by burning it out.
Once you have read how far should I overclock and is the cpu fan enough or would I need water cooling?

Motherboard: MICRO-START INTERNATIONAL CO .LTD MS-7125
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
RAM: 1GB DDR Ram (Yes I be upgrading the ram to 4 at least soon)
Graphics: Currently a crappy PCI Card but going to upgrade to Nvidia 650TI

Thanks!

You'd need a very good CPU cooler to overclock it, but even then I doubt you'd get near to good gaming performance with it.

I am interested to see how good this can play games.

I getting a good graphics card and16gb ddr ram since ddr might be abit slower it help to get the most ram.

I did play some games on a Asus gaming board
Intel Pentium 3ghz
But that was ddr3

So if I overclocked it to 3ghz with just the fan would that hurt it?

I think the fan detects hit and is automatic.

Hurt it? It would probably nuke it. Presuming you have a stock AMD cooler on it. If you want to OC a full 1GHz you're going to need water cooling.

Good point might wait till I get water cooling then lol, last thing I want is another probablem.

If I had water cooling could I get a whole 2ghz?

And will DDR effect my gaming experience compared to ddr3? (if I had 8 or 16gb installed with a geforce 650ti graphics card)

How would you say the board is around? I know its a old gaming system that can apparently play gta iv with the onbord nforce 4

Water cooling will not magically let you double the frequency of your CPU, overclocking is a fine process which needs time and due care and attention. It must be done incrementally with plenty of stress testing in between increments to check to see if your overclocks are stable. I'd take one of two routes; a) read up on overclocking and make sure you understand 100% what you are doing before you try anything or b) don't bother.

I'd opt for the latter as a dual core CPU is going to bottleneck any modern GPU and won't provide the best gaming experience. There's also no point getting 16GB RAM as no game will benefit from that, DDR2 is DDR2 no matter how much you throw at it.

I think your dreams are far higher than what is realistically possible.

youll be lucky to get 300-400mhz overclock. even with a decent cooler.

anything you buy will just be wasted money on an old dog.. look to save that money and up and build a new system. even a budget on will be 10x better than this.

amd fx 6300= £80
generic mobo=£40
gtx750ti=£120 or 7870=£140
4gb ram=£30
branded psu= ~£50
hard drive= ~£40

so for around £350 (covert that into your currency/google the parts in your area)
youll have a very capable machine that will easily play the latest games on a very small budget.

The board I recently had was only 2 months old..

Think I will wait 6 months then get another new motherboard but this time from different supplier.
My budget is tight.

I go from Australian Dollars but I will covert that.

And what is the msi board designed to play?

Some say it can play gta iv

Might be better of getting a decent Xbox system with a good capture card.

I think you need to do some googling on computer parts and their uses :)

msi board mean nothing im affraid. msi is a brand and they make many of components.

your 2 main concerns with games when building a computer is the cpu and the graphic card (gpu). neither are "designed" to play certain games, the are just capable of doing so.

for a decent gaming setup you want a quad core minimum. most modern games have highly compressed audio that is normally allocated to 1 core, if you only have 2 youve halved your power.

next the graphics card, in simple terms, thw more you spend, the more you get and the better it is.

now if youre sat there with a budget monitor with a 1024x768 display you dont need a super fast high end gpu. but if 1080p is your goal you want something like a 750ti, 660ti, hd7870 or r7 260 minimim.

you mention capture card, so you intend to be the next pwediepie?!? then you need basically an even better system, if youre recording game content while playing then it needs added resources to handle that.
Nvidia cards have a feature called shadow play which can record the last 30mins of gameplay at the push of a button. which is a cool feature if youve just had a good game of cod ect.

your best bet is not to spend any money on this pc. its old, very old. nothing you buy will make it much better, as it will just move the problem to the next weakest link or bottleneck in pc terms.

use what I listed as a rough guide to the components you need. I build a few computers with thise components for people. people who are on a budget but still want a decent pc experience.

p.s dont get an xbox.. both current gen consoles are soooo bad. id be offended if modern games like watchdogs only plaued at 729p at 30fps.. my 4 year old backup pc in my shed is capable of that!!

The main reason is why I swapped the boards around is so I can at least get on the internet as I didn't trust the other board it kept breaking down and having issues first the on board then the slots (including the pci slots)

I did have a nivida 650TI Graphics Card which played games perfectly but only tested on newer machines so I might buy that.

What I might do is stick with this board for 6 months get A decent graphics/sound Card & HDD so everything is ready the as i'm currently using A IDE HDD.

I already have a low budget 420P Monitor been using the same monitor for 6 years now (Dell) so that should save some lag.

As for caption card you could say yes & no, Not exactly the next pewdiepie as i'm not him but I aim to be unique and I do you tube because I love gaming not because I want to be like pewdiepie ;)

For the xbox I agree that's the whole reason why I moved to PC gaming but my whole problem is not finding a board that is reliable.

How did my
asus p8b75-m lx
Intel Penitum Sokcet 1155

Play games perfectly that was not the best processor but my first desktop a few years back. then again it was ddr3.

For a old computer the MSI board i'm using now seems to multi task good not sure about games yet but like you said probably won't play modern games.

Would it be best to just sell this machine? then go without a computer for a few months till can get a decent board and cpu. selling it will help towards the money for a new build.

Be lucky to have $25 to my self this pay due to the high bills etc..

in all honesty youd probably only get $100 for your current pc if that.
older tech never holds its value very well. keep what you have for now and be happy with it till you can afford a new one :) theres plenty of classic games that you can enjoy that will run perfectly well.
